Alexander Wang’s blondes.

When I left work on Friday night (at 9pm) there were 9 runway models in the salon getting “1950s blonde” in preparation for Saturday night’s Alexander Wang Spring 2013 show. My bosses, who are both colorists, work closely with a few modeling agencies here in New York. They get a call from the models’ agent, and get a mere word/phrase of what they need their color to look like for that particular job. In this case it was 1950s blonde, but really anything could be used to describe what the end result needs to look like. They get food, decades/eras, celebrities, art, movies, etc for their guidance. In this industry, it’s so important to know pop culture, art, fashion and anything else that a client would use for inspiration. You want a good general knowledge of those kinds of things so that you can keep them happy, no matter how crazy their description seems!

Maybe it’s Lucille Ball red, maybe it’s Brigitte Bardot waves, maybe it’s butter blonde, Roman Holiday chop, or a 1970s fringe…nothing feels better than being on the same page as your client.

Now let’s look at these 1950s blondes. This show looked amazing, wish I could have been there.

Incredible.

PS protect your blonde ends with my favorite argan oil.

My hair crush on Erin Wasson

You could say that I have a slight hair crush on Erin Wasson. You could also say that I have a style crush, a leg crush, and a hat crush too. Really, I just have an overall girl crush on her. Doesn’t she seem like a rowdy time? She is always being cool, just plain cool in every picture I see of her.

Anyway, her hair is always cool too. A little wild and a little natural, like she doesn’t care. She just wants to rock.

Here are a few photos that I love of Erin Wasson. Of course it was impossible to find a source for any of them, but the first one looks a little Terry Richardson to me.

There are tons of photos of her in various hats. Like a dream.

Getting Erin’s hair is simple. Allow bedhead. Allow roots. Allow your hair to party.

Models off duty.

I was catching up on a photo blog that I love, called Altamira:Models off duty, when I saw this picture of supermodel Alana Zimmer. It was taken in the middle of July, just a few weeks before I cut about 3 or 4 inches off of her hair! Models are constantly having their hair done for shoots/shows, and it’s hard to keep it healthy with all the heat styling. Alana wanted to get the dry guys off the ends to keep it fresh and ship-shaped. She looks beautiful with her healthy in-between length hair.

Along with being super tall and even super-y beautiful, Alana is also perfectly sweet and spunky. Here are a few pictures of some of the gorgeous work she’s done.

Want to know the trick to cutting a model’s hair? Keep the cut as natural as possible with very few layers and lots of dry cutting to soften the ends up. Alana told me it took her years to grow out her bangs because they kept having to be cut at shoots. This is what my friend Anna has experienced with her bob. Everytime she gets it past her shoulders, her agency or a client makes her cut it. I guess that is what you get for looking so hot with a bob.
