In this second episode of “In a Hairry”, I do my hair for a very special night in. Watch the video to not only see who this mystery date is, but also to see if I can complete my “60s Hair Headband” in time!

Hairdresser on Fire – In A Hairry – The Date from Joe Varca on Vimeo.

I’m not going to say that this has to be for Valentine’s day, but it does make good date hair, am I right? And when I say date, you know I mean a night out/in with any of the following: your boyfriend/girlfriend, spouse, the Lifetime Movie Network, Netflix, your favorite Brazilian, some Chinese take-out, a good book, a glass/bottle of wine, your kids, your cats, etc.

Instructions for my 60s Hair Headband:

Part your hair as desired.

Grab a section of hair above your ear, but far enough down that it will be covered by the hair on top of your head.

Cross the section of hair to the other side of your head, smoothing as you go and pin in place.

Repeat on the other side.

Optional: Tease the crown of your head for more volume.

Thank you all for reading and supporting Hairdresser on Fire over 2012! It’s been a big year with lots of changes, and I appreciate all of you for joining in on the fun with your comments and emails.

I thought it would be fun to show you a little of what goes on behind the scenes when my tutorials are filmed. I hope you enjoy these silly outtakes. They crack me up!

What are you doing for New Years Eve? I made a ridiculous headpiece with my friend Holly. Can’t wait to show you all!

I’m so looking forward to a fresh year. I’ve never been so excited for things to come.

Safe and happy celebrating to all!

Kisses

I’m beside myself with excitement to introduce a new series of videos on Hairdresser On Fire. This series of tutorials will all be styles that can be done in well under two minutes, you know, for the girl who’s in a hairry!

In A Hairry – Hairdresser on Fire – Hairry 1 from Joe Varca on Vimeo.

Step by step instructions:

Flip your head upside down.
Start a french braid at the nape of your neck.
Braid until you get to the crown of your head and gather all the rest of your hair into your hand firmly.
Tie up into a pony tail
Twist or stuff into a bun and pin/tie into place.
Pull down your mancatchers.
Go about your business.

This video is also special, because it’s the first time having my new theme song featured! My sister/brotherinlaw’s great band, Imagination Head, wrote this little jingle for my videos and it makes me feel like Hairdresser On Fire is finally complete. I love my job.

Thanks to Imagination Head and Joe Varca for another great video! See our other videos here!

If you’re looking for an elaborate Halloween costume that is easy and cheap, then I suggest you watch this tutorial. I love Halloween and totally wouldn’t mind doing Halloween hair tutorials only from here on out.

Supplies you’ll need:

Comb
Hairpins (work better than bobbies)
Hairspray
Styrofoam Cone
Hair
Extensions (Optional)

Instructions:

Tease your hair until it’s high and mighty.  Spray with hairspray like crazy. Place Styrofoam cone on your head in desired position. Pull up large sections of your hair to cover the foam cone, and pin into styrofoam. You can stick the pins directly into the foam! Continue until foam is completely covered by your hair and it feels secure. Optional: add a strip of extensions onto either side of your head at the temple area. I curled mine with a marcel iron. Spray with hairspray like crazy.

Now you’re ready to get married. Lots of people are possessed on their wedding day you know.

My favorite parts are all the parts with huge hair, and when the candle gets lit. My least favorite part was combing out the teasing which mightn’t have been so bad if I had done it that night instead of stuffing it into a bun for two more days…

And just because I have to say it somewhere…I would like you to know that I was this close to calling this a “spooktorial”.

Special thanks to the very talented Joe Varca for making this awesome film and Amanda Blair for being the world’s best light flickerer.

What do you think?

Whittemore House Movie

A few months after I started at Whittemore House, we filmed this movie to tell the story of the salon. You think you’re going in to any old salon to get your hair done, but crazy things happen in that place! I had fun playing the part of the waitress, a color client, one of the leg ladies, and a dancing girl in the mirror. It’s fun to remember the two days of filming and how silly we all got by the end of the second day.

Ever since the Hippie Halo, I’ve been promising another video with Emi Jay and here it finally is! In this video, you’ll see all the ways my beaded bestie (Karrie) and I try out Emi Jay’s multi-strand beaded headband, and a pretty little braid tutorial towards the end that I came up with just for the video.

Watch the video below, and please enjoy! This one might just be my favorite!

Many thanks to the great band Honeypie for letting us feature their song No Difference. Make sure you check out their new album Fields Don’t Disappear! They can also be found on facebook and their music can be downloaded on iTunes or Bandcamp.

If you are a great musician or band, or know of any that would like to be featured in a tutorial like Honeypie, email me at [email protected]

Last but not least, a very special thanks to Joe Varca, Franke Varca, and my beaded bestie Karrie Gholson…who came over and spent an entire night giggling with me during the making of this tutorial.
