Men’s hair with a razor

I’ve been using a straight razor more and more on my man haircuts these days. I’m not really a fan of that crunchy hard “gel” look, so any and all texture that can be added to their hair just means less product needed for styling. One of my very favorite clients, Clay, (who I should mention is engaged to my good friend Jen B!) only uses a spritz or two of Ocean Mist, which he discovered because Jen uses it! The combination of the razor with the salty spray and his natural waves is like money in the bank. I don’t know how it’s like money in the bank, but I heard a rapper sing that and I knew I wanted to use it on my blog (I believe in honesty even when it proves that you’re a huge nerd.).

Oh, don’t let me forget the neckline! Undercutting the neckline so it lays softly is the key. I need a picture, don’t I?

Hairstylists, what’s your favorite trick for man haircuts? I like calling it a man haircut. It sounds caveman-ish.

SOOOO if a someone with curly hair (along the same lines as this: https://andrewmorel.com/wp-content/uploads/annalynne-mccord-voluminous-curly-hair-iris-premiere-style.jpeg)

can this hypothetical someone use sea salt spray to get a similar wispy whimsical hair style? what would you ask for in a cut?

I seem to want my guy clients, to not look like they just got a cut…meaning not too clean cut! So I always like to texturize like crazy! I do lots of point-cutting and cross-check with some texturizing shears. It grows out so much nicer that way!;)

    Man Haircut Question!!!
I am a farely new hairdresser (graduated 6 months ago and about to be in the salon) I didn’t get a lot of male haircuts in school and when i did was absolutely terrified! I feel that you either get the guy that’s like “I want this, If you screw it up whatever it grows back” or the guy that is so particular about every hair on his head. In school we weren’t aloud to use guards but i feel that’s the only way i have the confidence to give a man cut, until i learn more and get used to them. I’m okay with scissors all over, if they like it long, but any suggests or words of advice, they would be much appreciated :) !!???

I love the idea of a razor/sea spray on a wavy texture. I love a multi-tool approach. Carving comb, razor, shears & clippers. Razor over comb is my latest obsession. It helps stick straight hair lay beautifully.

Would the whole short hair/sea spray work on women as well do you think? I’m in the process of growing out a pixie and I’m trying to avoid that soccer mom hair. Thanks

Hi! I don’t have a comment about guys hair, but I do have a question – What’s new for 2013??
My hair needs a change and I want to know what to do with my medium long hair because it’s feeling blah.
Maybe you could do a post on what’s trending at your salon?

it’s a lovely idea, but will it work for straight hair? or is there any more products I should give to my man to get the same result as in the picture?

As much as think using a razor is no different to a quality pair of hanzo shears, my clients can sometimes get nervous when the razors make an appearance. I guess it just depends on how well you know them and their general trust and mood on the day. But absolutely! texture all the way!
