Holding out for highlights.

I have a little game I like to play called “how long can Reagan go in between highlights”. The motivation behind this game is that my locks are naturally dry and highlights do a number on my hair’s health. Since I’m hoping to grow out my hair long enough to clothe me this winter, I have to be careful with the chemical services. Y’all, this game is a matter of necessity…I just pretend that it’s fun.

So this round of the game lasted since early February. If you remember, I went quite a bit lighter. I held out an impressive 4 and a half months, and have a feeling I can go longer next time.

Here I am before the touch up..roots for days, er, months.

Silly roots!

So, I blocked out a little time at work to have my roots done, but gave special instructions to go easy on the processing (I told my colorist about the game). So she did a light painting at my roots, being careful not to saturate the hair too much with the bleach so that it will have a much more natural effect. It’s very subtle and lots of my true color is still there, just a little brightening up. Especially at the front. She nailed it. Mark my words, I’m going at least six months this time.

(Looking up to the heavens for support during this journey)

I’ve found that the painting technique (free handing the application, rather than using foils) allows you to go much longer between services. How long do you go in-between? Do you have any strategies to growing out your hair healthy and quickly?

See you in December, bleach!

Girl I have to get my roots done once a month!! Errr this white hair is a Bee-atch! I am having fun with it but my hair under is so dark now that it looks funny if I go to long without a touch up. Gonna see how long I can keep this up before I go flat broke haha!

I have never colored my hair for fear of the touchups.

Honestly though, your hair (especially in that top picture) looks good. It’s like sort of ombre, but not really too noticeable. I wouldn’t worry about the delay between touchups!!

I used to do a 3/4 head of blonde foils on my dark, ashy blond hair and I had to get root touch ups every 4-6 weeks at the most. Now I have ombre balayage with my natural colour at the roots, and although I need a toner every two months or so, I can go at least 6 months without needing a re-colour. It’s heaven!

Your hair looks fantastic, that’s a great idea to help extend the time between touch ups. So far, my hair and I can only hold out for about 2 1/2 months max!

Looks good! I just went to a hair show back in January with Kim Vo and he taught this type a technique. The Baliage! Lovin it! Also I love the smudge technique he showed as well! Easy, fast, and natural!

I love your highlights! Who does them? I’m visiting New York in a few weeks and would love to get my color done during the trip.

I know this is a hair blog but I’m in love with your nail polish. Do you remember what color you used?

I love the soft waves in your first, pre-highlights photo, but i can never seem to get my hair to do that. My hair is long and naturally straight, and it doesn’t have a lot of texture, so i have a hard time getting it to hold a style. Are there any tips or products you can recommend for when i want to let my hair down without it falling flat?
