My Beauty Secrets: Starting with the face

I have been meaning to write about make up and non-hair beauty products for a while. I even filmed a tutorial with Jake a while back that was accidentally erased and never re-shot. So, I thought I’d do a little series of a few tips and products I love.

Want to know a confession? I’m not really that girly.

I mean, clearly I’m super girly…what with all the lipstick and ruffles and heels I wear, but would you believe that I really don’t do all the girly stuff that most of my friends do? I do my own nails 99% of the time, I don’t get facials, I don’t get waxed  (tmi?), I don’t tweeze my eyebrows and I rarely wear perfume.

I do love beauty products though. I could go to Sephora, MAC, NARS or even the beauty aisle at Target and look at every single product they sell. Reading what each product does, investigating new colors of lipstick, etc. So let’s dish about my favorite products shall we?

In this post, I’m going to talk about the face. Specifically skin.

So, to be honest, I’m super lazy about washing my face, and I generally just use baby wipes to wash off my make up. Any dermatologists/estheticians out there disgusted by this? Is it bad? I don’t know, I was using some Neutragena wipes for a while and they didn’t seem that different. I can’t be sure, but I think I use Pamper’s brand. That just made me laugh to type.

My favorite facial scrub is from Keihl’s. It’s their Pineapple-Papaya Facial Scrub. Get ready to see a lot of Keihl’s products on here. Their skin stuff is the best there is.

Next is the Keihl’s Avocado Eye Cream. This stuff is so rich and refreshing. My friend Linda gave me a tip to keep this in the refrigerator. The cold eye cream feels like heaven under my eyes. Those old bags of mine…

My favorite daily moisturizer is also from Keihl’s. I really wish they were paying me to say this. My only complaint is that daily moisturizers almost never come with an SPF higher than 15. I would like to see 30 in my daily SPF.

Last but not least (and also not Keihl’s or a baby’s butt product!), Burt’s Bees Night Cream!

This is everything you want in a night cream. It is so rich and thick and I wake up the next morning feeling like I should put on some diamonds to match this fancy skin of mine. This is way too heavy to wear during the day (it’s shiny), but it doesn’t make me break out at all and it really is just so awesome. Even Jake uses it to fancy up his face. Burt’s Bees has a day cream that is great too, but it doesn’t have SPF and I find that I just plain need that in my face skin’s life.

What are your favorite moisture/face wash products? Do you use Burt’s Bees or Keihl’s?

Next week I’ll be posting my “Two Minute Make-up” routine.

You are doing a lot of good things for your skin, but I think you need to use a cleanser rather than wipes. You seem to have great skin and are lucky enough to not break out from not using soap and water, BUT in the long run wipes will miss other things like the free radicals that cause aging and wrinkles. Free radicals get in your skin just from walking outside, especially in cities with lots of pollution. They can also come from makeup and other things as well. I’m OBSESSED with anti-aging, it makes me get wordy about these things :)
The line I use at work called Image makes spf 30 moisturizers and 35. I like them so far. Maybe you’d like that? Cudos for using all good stuff you do. You’d be surprised what a lot of people don’t do.

But there is a medications/supplements that can actually lessen the free radicals in our body. Am I right?

I’m in a stage make-up class now, and our professor actually recommends we use baby wipes to remove our make-up. Her theory is that if its sensitive enough for a baby’s butt, it’s fine for our skin. Though she does tell us to use that in conjunction with a daily cleanser.

i use the target Boots no.7 brand face wipes (i even use one after i get out of the shower with a clean face because they are so refreshing!) but you’re right, they are probably just expensive baby wipes :p speaking of, have you tried the target brand baby wipes? i prefer them to pampers for my baby’s butt… they’re bigger and softer. maybe they’d make good face wipes too? :)

My favorite product for washing my face is Dove sensitive skin bar soap. The first time I used it I could feel a difference in my face! Since I’ve started using it, my breakouts have been nearly non-existent…yeah!

I use a little vaseline around my eyes at night and have been happy with some inexpensive (sensitive sking) face lotion and eye cream from Walmart. Does anyone have a recommendation for a sensitive skin face lotion with spf? Those I’ve tried make me feel (and smell) like I’m going to the beach.

I exfoliate a few times a week by scrubbing with a washcloth.

In the winter when my skin gets much drier, I actually use Vick’s menthol rub on my face at night. Sounds really weird, but I think there’s something magic in that stuff. It cleared up a skin condition on my dog’s ears once, too! hee hee!

Skin Ceuticals makes an amazing sunscreen. It’s spf 50, but it also has a bit of a tint to it. It adds a brilliant shine to to your skin!

I am obsessed with the Somme Institute line. I noticed a difference in my skin immediately when I started using it and I haven’t been able to quit. I am kind of lazy about it, though. I only use it every other day and the other day just splash water on my face. (I don’t wear make up every day AND i work from home.) The Somme line is the BEST, though.

My aesthetician told me that unless I’m using a daily moisturizer with zinc oxide, it doesn’t matter if it’s like SPF 92. Zinc oxide is what blocks UVA/UVB and UVEverything. I found one that actually goes on smoothly (it’s a little thick at first), but it soaks into my skin beautifully. It’s SkinMedica Environmental Defense Sunscreen SPF 30+ (www.skinmedica.com). A little pricey, but worth it knowing I’m blocking all that crap.

Oooh, I wanna try that Kiehl facial scrub. Sounds awesome. I use Clinique cleansers and clarifying lotion. Although, I’m real lazy and don’t wash my face as much as I probably should. I’ve tried switching to other brands, like most recently Boots No. 7, but nothing makes my skin feel as clean as the Clinique stuff. With anything else, I always feel like I have a layer of grime on my face. The moisturizer I use is Eucerin Face Lotion with an SPF 30. I love it!
