My new red hair.

Last week at work I showed one of the colorists a picture of a beautiful golden blond girl. It was pretty light on the ends, but the roots were a rich dirty blond. It was hardly different from my current hair color, which is darker than usual right now. I just wanted more blond at the ends and ribboned into my bangs. We decided we would do it this week.

Yesterday when we were about to get start with my color, she said “I’ve been thinking about it, and i think we should do more reddish tones on your base”. I got excited about that, thinking of kind of a light carrot-y color. We had a totally different idea pictured in the two of our minds, because this is what the “reddish tone” came out as….

Lucky for my colorist, I love it. It is the prettiest red I’ve ever seen and I can’t believe how much it suits my skin. I always feel like I look terrible with dark hair, but maybe it was just the wrong tone? This will fade quite a bit since she used a semi-permanent color, and the pink highlights at the bottom (hard to see in the pictures) will turn more blond.  I love it just the way it is, but I’m excited to see it fade along the way into a new look each week!

I’ve never even thought about being a redhead, it’s so fun to do something so dramatic! Just one of the many reasons working in a salon is like having a sleepover as your career. Loves.

What about you? Do you go bold with your hair color changes?

PS I think I’m a bit Florence and the Machine?

FC (funny Client): “Going gray is like….it’s like a ship, going out to sea. You know? It’s always an adjustment….it’s always an adjustment.”

Me: “That’s true.”

My Head: ‘What? Did I just agree with the ship analogy?’

(half an hour later)

FC: “Going gray is like…it’s like getting dressed in the morning. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t”

Me: “That’s a really good point.”

My Brain: ‘Ummmmmm.’

ps I changed this post a little because I love this client very much and I was feeling guilty and mean about the alias I gave her. I’m not trying to be mean, I just have funny conversations at work sometimes that need to be shared with the world.

Keratin, what have you been waiting for?

I’ve been meaning to write about Keratin for a while now. I’ve gotten several questions about it so it’s really about dang time I discuss it on the blog! If you don’t know what it is, Keratin (or Brazilian Blow Out) is a protein treatment that smooths and fills the cuticle of your hair, dramatically reducing frizz. It is applied to clean, dry hair and then sealed in with a very hot (450 degrees F) flat iron.

Here are some pros:
~Blow drying your hair will be half the job for you
~Blow dries will last days longer
~Blow drying your hair will be half the job for me! (but not half the money, too bad, hehehe)
~Hair will look shinier, healthier and smoothier
~It’s not a chemical process, so it isn’t damaging (aside from the 450 degree flat ironing)
~You might get yourself a boyfriend/husband in like one minute

Here are some cons:
~It’s expensive, my salon starts at $300 and goes higher depending on length and thickness
~You have to use specific sulfate free shampoos
~Some people have said it relaxes parts of their hair unevenly after the second or third time getting the treatment
~You can’t shampoo, tuck your hair behind your ears, use a headband/pony or sweat for three days after getting the treatment, which is inconvenient

Good to know:
~It is not a Relaxer/straightener. It will soften your wave/curls, but don’t expect pin straight hair a la Japanese straightener.
~It last 4-6 months.
~It takes 2+ hours for the treatment.
~Like I said, you can’t shampoo your hair for 3 days, or use a pony or anything that might kink it.
~Some brands are still using formaldehyde in the product, so be sure to google the specific brand before getting it. Most have cut out the formaldy, but just make sure.
~Keratin is best for people with wavy to curly or frizzy hair who straighten or blow dry it. It is really a miracle treatment for this type of person, and it is definitely the newest hair craze. For good reason.
~I don’t get Keratin on my own hair, because I like frizz and also it softens wave, which I don’t want since I wear my hair wavy every day.

If you are the right person for it, it is a really amazing treatment, and very worth the money. I have seen Keratin change people’s lives. I have a regular client with afro-hair who gets keratin and every time she comes in for a blow out, I feel like it is one of those times in your life when you have done something so miraculous in just 45 minutes that you accidentally kurtsy afterwords and everyone whispers about it later. And also since she started getting the Keratin, I no longer feel like I have just spent 2 hours at the gym when I’m done with her. So that’s always nice.

I definitely recommend the Keratin treatment.

The truth about doing your hair in 5 seconds.

Guys, I have bad news.

You can’t have amazing hair without spending a little time on it. I get a lot of questions saying things like…

“I’m a mom and I’m so busy and I literally haven’t had my hair cut in 2 years and I don’t have even 3 minutes to style it, how can I look like a model?”

Ok, so that is a fake question. But I really have several in my inbox that aren’t too far off. I know the majority of us aren’t trying to spend an hour and a half daily on our hair, but if you want to have pretty hair, you can’t expect much unless you’re willing to spend a little time on it. You can cut corners, but you have to level with me here…..you have to do your hair for it to look good.

Also, I don’t believe you. Everyone has 10, 15 or 20 minutes to run a curling iron over the front or throw it in a cute pony. Did that sound rude? It wasn’t supposed to, but I hear a lot of people say that they don’t have time work out, or clean their apartment. I don’t believe them either. Because I don’t have that kind of time at all, but working out is a priority of mine, so I make time for it. Cleaning is a drag and I’m tired, so I have a messy apartment. See a pattern?

So, I’m sorry, in fact I’m very sorry, but you have to put in a little time. There is no miracle treatment or product to have hair like this….

…out of no where.

All you ladies asking if a perm will make your life easier, I would say in most cases, no. It wont. It will still need to be styled, dried and producted like your non-permed hair. But add damage and up-keep and conditioning treatments to the list.

Guys, I mean it, I’m sorry! If you invent some special secret wand that makes your hair like the picture out of no-where, will you give it to me or at least sell it to me for cheap?

(note: there is a very small small small amount of humans who have amazing hair that doesn’t need anything; no time, no product and no styling. They are the rare exception to this post and we hate them.)

ps I have a client who comes in with pictures of very meticulously styled do’s. She says she wants that haircut, but “make it so that it looks like this straight out of the shower, k?”. Guys, she is so dead serious! We have had the same conversation 20-30 times. I would laugh but it is too stressful. When I see her on my schedule I get sweaty immediately out of stress.

Don’t make fun of Zac Efron in front of me.

Zac Efron has great hair. Mostly. Sometimes I used to be like, ok ok ok, your hair is sweepy, we get it. But most of the time, I think he has just the right amount of thickness, curl, flip, separation and suaveness.

It’s kind of funny, because usually when a guy is sitting in my chair, trying so hard to explain the hair cut he wants, I am thinking “he wants a Zac Efron”, but when I say that out loud, the guy gets embarrassed and says “no way, I want the opposite”. But he has just spent the last ten minutes explaining Zac Efron’s hair to a T, so then I say sure and give him the Zac Efron anyway. He loves it and leaves my salon zippity doo-dah-ing down Broadway. And I knew all along what was in his hair’s best interest. Is it because Zac Efron is a teen hear throb that guys are scared off? I think he is the next Leonardo DiCaprio and that’s in a good way. Who wouldn’t want this guy’s hair?

plus, look at all the strange places he finds himself wearing a suit? Ooops, I’m laying on the beach in a skinny suit and pea coat! How did this ever happen?

Hair Answers: Hair Loss

With this edition of “Hair Answers” I won’t be posting a question. I have had several emails about this, so I’m going to do a general answer to hopefully satisfy the many questions I’ve gotten about hair loss. This is one of those topics that I felt a need to bump up the list because it is one that is actually a real problem, rather than “I want to look exactly like Scarlet Johansson and I don’t so my life sucks..” <-that isn’t really a real question I’ve gotten. Don’t get your feelings hurt!

Back to hair loss….

The majority of my clients suffering from hair loss, are losing it in relation to having a new baby, but there are many reasons for alopecia. Sickness, surgery, weight loss/gain or anything else causing emotional or physical stress. I’m not an expert (or a doctor) with making your hair grow thicker and more quickly, but I am an expert in hiding bald spots and figuring out the right cut. I have a client who was very sick and her medication caused her hair to fall out in clumps. She has several bald spots that were causing her a lot of stress, but together we have figured out a great way to conceal them! I’m telling you, no one knows she has bald spots. Not her boyfriend, not her friends. No one other than me and her mom.

The Pregnancy Fringe is what I call the short hairs all around a woman’s hairline after she delivers a baby. Most women lose a lot of hair in the front, and those baby hairs stick up straight and can look kind of funny. The best way I have found to deal with the pregnancy fringe, is to angle or cut bangs in the front. Blow dry your hair down into your face to force the hairs to lay down, the bangs/angling will cover up those little fringies. Use a product with hold (I recommend a wax) to keep those babies in place. The worst thing you can do is pull your hair all the way back with no part. It draws attention to your new strange hairline and all your baby fine front hairs. Don’t do this. And if you insist on it, don’t come crying to me when people ask you how old your new baby is when you aren’t even with her/him.

Thin hair and bald spots are a little trickier, but aren’t hopeless cases. The first thing you want to do is tell your stylist about your situation and ask for a cut that creates fullness. Most likely this will be a haircut with minor graduation, not anything choppy or severe. Avoid anything too long.

Now I want you to be open minded to my next few suggestions…..

Hair powder. This bumble and bumble product (above img) is a life savor. You can buy it in a shade close to your own and spray it to cover up bald spots or too much scalp showing through very thin hair. It is unbelievable how natural it looks. If you are self conscious about bald spots or extremely thinning hair, you really need to try this product.

Extensions. You don’t have to spend thousands on the permanent extensions, but if you have thin hair you might want to invest in some clip ins. The client I mentioned earlier uses some just for thickening, along with the hair powder, and I swear you would never know she has lost half of her hair. Really. It’s the type of situation where we both cry and hug each other at the end of an appointment.

Highlights. Subtle highlights can add more dimension to your hair. It makes it look fuller. Pretty much on everyone! But careful not to damage your hair with over processing!

Eat Healthy, take care of yourself, take vitamins and get enough sleep. These are the best ways to keep your hair growing in healthy. But if you are really concerned about severe hair loss, you should see your doctor.

Guys, I’m not going to rest until everyone I meet has better hair than they did the day before.

Goodnight.

Code words

I have a client who texts me with all kinds of code words. I’ll get one randomly and laugh so hard. Here is an example of what one might say….

“Hey curlypants! Do you think you have time for scissorhands and a full monty this afternoon?”

Translation:

Curlypants=Reagan’s nickname
Scissorhands=Haircut
Full Monty=Blow out, Curling iron and set in pins (she takes them out later)

It makes me laugh and it also makes me feel like a secret agent doing super spy hairstyling.

Hair Answers: Products for short hair

Q by Annie: I have super short hair and am on a never ending quest to find a good quality styling aide that gives me a a textural flexible hold without making my hair look greasy. I play with my hair a lot, so I need a product that won’t break down under my fingers. Come to think of it, it seems that I have my best hair days at the beach; perhaps the sand and saltwater are a factor? Do you know of any products that will help me recreate that same feel every day? Thanks, Annie
A by Reagan: Oh man, I feel you there. Why can’t someone just bottle up salt water for the beachy women of the world? Turns out, salt isn’t all that great for your hair anyway, so I guess it’s better that way…
So, the first two products that popped up into mind were Rough Paste by redken and L’Oreal Professionnel Texture Expert Tendre Forme. Super long name on the second one, but that seems to be the M.O. of the French, oui? I’ve had a ridiculous time finding the second product online (I can only find it on European sites!) so ask your stylist about it if you are having the same trouble that I am. I can get it in my salon for those of you who live in NY and want it.

What I love about these products, are that they are a waxy feel, but a medium hold. They are great for shaping, but are workable throughout the day.  Make sure you rub any waxes in your hands (heating it up) before putting in your hair to ensure it’s evenly applied. You don’t want to be the globby haired girl on the block, do you? I know I don’t. Also, since you deal with oily hair, apply from ends to roots.
How’s this for the student teaching the teacher…my own client told me she uses wax on her curly, shoulder length hair. I was like GGGUUUUHHHH-WHAT? YOU DO WHAT? COME AGAIN? Maybe this is going to give me a bad reputation with all of you, but I had never even thought of that before. I love it! I do it (with the second product) when my hair is completely dry. It seals frizz and gives hold and like I said, is very workable. The other other other awesome thing about both of these products, you can share them with any men that you might live with. Jake used Rough Paste for several years before switching to Redken’s Work Hard.
Someone should be paying me for all these recommendations…

The Biebster

A few years ago I felt the same way about the Katie Holmes bob. Let it be known that in 2010 I have decided I could happily go the rest of my life NOT doing another “Justin Bieber”. What is with mom’s suddenly bringing their sons in for $45 dollar haircut anyway? I guess he is pretty dreamy with his head gently resting on his palm….laying in that red pleather bean bag all sexily. Eww.
