My Favorite Movie Hair: Holly Golightly

Ive decided to start a new segment on my blog about hair from the movies! Movies often inspire trends in every sense of the word, and Id be lying if told you they dont inspire me. Sometimes I catch myself loving or hating a movie, based on the hair/costume/styling alone. There are so many iconic hair moments in movies, and Im really excited to share my favorites with you here!

It might be the obvious choice, but my first favorite movie hair is Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffanys. I love this movie. I love everything about it. When I watch Holly on the screen, I am mesmerized with her life, her apartment, her relationships, her cat, her clothes, her business (Snow in New Orleans!) and of courseher hair.

She basically wears a huge glorious french twist the whole movie. From the big swoop on top, to the highlights in the front, to her wispy little pixie bangs, its the perfect look. Holly Golightly might be my be all end all of girl crushes.

On to the pictures!

Are you humming Moon River yet?

To learn a basic french twist, go watch my full up fat twist tutorial!

Fact, about two years ago, I made it my mission to find a sleep mask like Hollys. I spent an entire Saturday ebaying and etsying and googling anything I could imagine that would find me this mask. I had no luck.

Painful Hair

My friend at work has been wanting to work on double french twists with my hair for a while. They are really hard to perfect, and are a serious accomplishment in the hair world if you can get there. Its basically two french twists both going toward the center, so the back of your head sort of looks like a glamorous butt crack. Double french twists are very, very hard to do right.

So, after loads of products, probably a hundred Japanese pins (which are like regular bobbi pins on crack), and not a single hair out of place, I felt like I had had a face lift. It was so tight!

Well, 3 or 4 clients into the day, and I started getting a headache. It was fine at first, but then it was getting worse by the minute. Soon I was feeling a little dizzy and shaky and nauseous! It was insane. I actually excused myself from a client, asked an assistant to start blow drying her, and ran to the back room in a panic to take out the pins.

After getting most of them out, I felt a little better, but my headache was there for good and it caused me to lose the entire content of my stomach. Can you believe that? It was so crazy to go back to my client like Hey, sorry about that, my hair was hurting so much that I threw up. How do you want your bangs today?.

I kept thinking about the girls that get tight tracks all over their head for weaves and the models that wear crazy hair all day long in photo shoots. I could not believe how sick my hair made me!

Anyway, all I have to say is that my friend has serious skills if she is able to do my hair sosososo tight. Talent!

I was hoping to wear my hair home so Jake could take some real pictures of the back. Double frenchies are so beautiful!

P.S. I said crack twice in this post! Now three.

Also, I have really only felt semi-painful hair from headbands or the occasional high bun/pony. Have you ever had that experience?

Hooray for a tutorial. I really like this one a lot, I hope youll like it too!

A few things I want to point out
~If you dont have a teasing comb, a rat tail comb works just find. You can also use a regular comb or a pick, but I prefer a teasing comb or a rat tail comb.
~Hair pins work so much better for this look than bobbi pins, I know that they can be a little trickier to figure out if youre not used to them. Let me know if any of you are struggling, and I can probably figure out a tutorial for that!
~Filming a tutorial backwards was my most awkward moment to date. And that is coming from a girl who got her first period at an 8th grade dance. Now do you know why I prefer to do tuties on my friends?
~Im sorry I just talked about periods. That always happens.
~Sorry I just made up another nickname for tutorial. That always happens too.
