2012 Golden Globes

Did you watch the Golden Globes last night? I did an impromptu live discussion on my facebook page of the show and it was so fun! I think now that it’s award season, I’ll have to do it more!

I have to say, I was very impressed with the women last night. The gowns, the make up, the hair. I wish I could say the same for the men. They were all way too tan. Oh well, they can’t all be as suave as Leonardo DiCaprio I guess.

Alright, here are my favorite looks of the night!
Img

The cut and color of Reese’s dress are perfect. The blood red looked great against her skin and hair. Normally, I would prefer a slicked pony with a structured gown like this, but she looked fresh and beautiful as she was. I couldnt find a photo of her without her hands on her waist, which was a shame because she was a hippy goddess in that red number, and her hands took away from that.

Img

Kate Beckinsale’s gown was such a great color on her. I loved the sharp neckline and her updo was the perfect choice.

Img

Nicole Richie walked onto the red carpet with straight up dinosaur hair, and I was feeling it. You know she had 20lbs of hair extensions in there, and it was beautiful. I want to recreate this look with some wave. Hot!

Img

Zooey Deschanel killed it. She looked so cool out there with her one of a kind Prada gown and her retro hair. I couldn’t find a great profile shot, but she had some kind of sideburn chops that completed the look. I think she may have been wearing a wig, because her hair is normally a lot longer, and I doubt she cut it.

Img

I always love Michelle Williams, but it wasn’t until she walked up onstage to accept her award that I saw how subtly slinky she looked in this gown. She could not be cooler. Showing hardly any skin and almost no jewelry, and she still looks gorgeous. Also, her speech about being a mom had me tearing up. She’s a lady. Oh yeah, and I loved that she brought her best friends Busy as her date.

Img

Claire Danes and Emily Blunt tied for first as my favorite gowns. I could not find a photo of Emily’s gown anywhere though! They both chose dresses that looked perfect with their hair color.

I’ve realized that my favorite gowns are usually sleeveless. I don’t like strapless on me, so I think I naturally lean towards a little fabric up top. There were so many hits on the red carpet, I could have gone on and on. Felicity Huffman? Tilda Swinton? Laura Dern? They all looked awesome. Who am I missing?

Lana Del Rey’s flowery headpieces.

I was recently introduced (well, my ears were) to Lana Del Rey by my friend Amanda Blair (you guys know her!)

Before I knew she had a pretty face and beautiful hair, I met her voice. She can sing so beautifully that all you can do is listen. I’ve been listening to her for about a month now, and have started to become interested in who this girl actually is. So, yes, she has amazing hair and a gorgeous face (and dude, pouty mouth!)…also, she calls herself a “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” which is important to me because These Boots Were Made For Walkin’ was the first song I ever memorized….But her flowery head pieces are the thing about her. They make me scream out loud and I want one in every color. And I want them to be made out of real flowers like hers.

See below.

I’m always a little sad to find out that some musicians come from a lot of money. It seems like an unfair advantage in the art world. To me, musicians (or any artist) are supposed to struggle in the beginning, it makes their music more authentic. Lana came from millionaire parents who found the right people to create an image for her (her real name is elizabeth grant) including a good plastic surgeon, but at least the girl really can sing. It’s just a little weird to find out that someone who seems so mysterious and interesting is kind of a fake. Despite all the controversy over her, her music is worth checking out. Give Video Games and Blue Jeans a listen!

Also, it’s pretty safe to say that I’m basically in love with floral head pieces. I think I like the top one the best.

My favorite blondes: Elle Fanning

LOVE shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot

Elle Fanning on the cover of LOVE magazine takes my breath away, pure and simple. The fuzzy waves and the random little white ribbon is just so pretty. I have been loving this cover for the last few months, and recently when I got my W in the mail with Elle and Dakota on it together I had a new Elle Fanning magazine cover to love. Both covers are styled (both clothes and hair/make up) and shot so well.

The Reverse Ombre (ish) done right!

I recently talked about the reverse ombre and why it’s a bad idea. But there is another way to do it that looks good and isn’t so much maintenance.

Instead of painting the highlights on to gradually go from light roots to dark ends, you can do your highlights on top like normal, and do a single process underneath. By going a few shades darker underneath, you are actually creating a very natural look. Naturally the sun wouldn’t lighten that hair, because it’s not ever reaching it. If you have layers, even long layers, the darker underneath part will peek through the lighter parts, making a similar “reverse ombre” effect. There is actually very minimal damage with color like this, because you don’t have to do highlights underneath, and that saves your ends from a lot of grief! I had my hair like this for several years. I would do a 7N or 8N underneath, and do highlights on top every few months to keep it bright.

Here are a few pictures!

You guys, I don’t know why I just don’t enjoy J-Simps’ company. Her hair is a good example of what I’m talking about though.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s is my favorite!

Nicole always has great hair. Not because she has naturally great hair, but because she has a great stylist.

Way back in beauty school, we called this look The Shadowbox. We did a more severe look like Christina Aguilera though. Back in 2002, I loved the platinum blonde with red or black underneath. You couldn’t pay me to do it now. Ha.

Would you try this look?

Cassie from Skins

I’m so excited because a week from tomorrow, I’m going to London for the first time! I absolutely cannot wait, and if any of you have some wildly exciting London suggestions, I welcome them in the comments. Hooray!

So, since I’ve got London on the brain, I’ve been thinking of one my favorite tv characters of all time. Cassie from the British show “Skins” was played by Hannah Murray. Cassie is a sweet, but lost teenager with all kinds of problems. When Cassie was on the screen, I couldn’t look away. She was such a lonely and confused little girl that I just wanted to care for. The acting was amazing and just thinking about it makes me want to Netflix the whole series again.

Another reason I love Cassie so much, is her hair and clothes. She always had some kind of cute touch to her hair. Maybe a bow or clip, messy waves or a piece here or there pinned up. Nothing every too done, which is my kind of style. I love the look of just spending 2 minutes to jazz up your hair. If the 2 minute style is a contest, then Cassie wins!

Isn’t she amazing? Did you ever watch that show?

(PS I’m not talking about the short-lived American version of Skins on MTV. The British one was amazing.)

Hair Answers: Best cut for very thin hair

Q by Claire: ***I have totally thin hair but I don’t want my hair shorter than ponytail length. Which cut is best for me? Also, I live in Australia. DBJ.

A by Reagan: Not to get all mushy on your Australian a’, but my heart really goes out to people with super duper thin hair. It is hard to feel beautiful when you aren’t happy with your hair. I have some really good tips for you though, Claire! So get pumped!

Tip number one-Get a trim often. Really thin hair tends to lose it’s shape much faster than thick hair. Keeping your ends trimmed up will make it look fuller.

Tip number two-Blunt cuts are best. Don’t let anyone use a razor or texturizing sheers on you. Avoid point cutting too. You want your ends blunt so that it doesn’t look stringy.

Tip number three-Avoid too many layers. It will make the length thinner. You can have long layers if you insist, but nothing shorter than an inch or two above the length.

Tip number four-Bangs (fringe) are awesome. I really try to talk my super thinnies out of lots of layers, like I was saying in tip three, so a straight, square cut with bangs makes for a nice style. Bangs prevent your cut from looking boring, and gives you a beautiful shape. There are many lengths and ways to wear bangs, so find something that you like with your face shape. A round face looks better with sweepy bangs.

Tip number five-Clip in extensions. You could also go for more permanent extensions, but those are very expensive and have to be redone every few months. I have clients who clip in a couple of rows when they go out, and it creates so much fullness. Remember, you can get extensions the same length as your hair if you don’t want your hair longer. Just a few rows will make a big difference. Give it a try!

Here are a few pictures of the ideal thinny hair cut.

Nicol Richie has extremely thin hair. This haircut is perfect for her. She has extensions all over the place for thickness, even in her bangs! I can tell, cause it’s my job to tell.

Agyness Deyn has a very similar cut, but shorter and with a heavier fringe. This look will be best between her length, and just an inch or two past your shoulders. You don’t have to have super short hair just because it’s thin!

***I wrote my own question for Claire, just to get to the point. Don’t be offended, Claire. I want you to be my friend, and one day I’m going to make it down to Australia.

ps, I give up with the pictures. no matter how I try, they never center properly. Boo.

Kate Middleton’s Hats

I’m a little obsessed with the recent royal engagement. I’m jeal’ of Kate Middleton because when I was little, I played with a Princess Diana paper doll, now Kate gets to wear her ring. I’m jeal’ of Kate Middleton because she gets to become a princess. But the reason I’m the most jeal’ of Kate Middleton, is because she has the most incredible hat collection of all time. There are a lot of things that I love about the Brits, like when they say “Brilliant!” or “Rubbish!” or “Spot of tea!”, but the hat thing they do there is my favorite. I just want to wear a big hat. Really. Really. Really hard.

I google imageĀ  “Kate Middleton Hats” often and sigh at her fanciness.

The end.

PS which one is your favorite? for me, the bigger, the better.

I’ve never been a huge fan of any particular reality star, but Kristin Cavalari looks stunning with this smooth as silk center part. It looks good both with a tee shirt and jeans, or with a fancy holiday party type dress. I love it!

Halloween Hair: Sid and Nancy

It’s Halloween week! Yay!

I love Halloween, so much. I love to dress up and I love to spice up my hair/make up too. Last year, Jake and I were Sid and Nancy, and the costumes came out perfect! (in my humble opinion!)

Along with the right clothes, what really made these costumes work, was the way we did our hair! I rolled my wet hair, bangs included, in tiny perm rods (think white, gray and pink!) and let it dry by itself all day. After I took the rods out, I fluffed and sprayed so it would hold. It looked rad even the next day. I seriously considered perming my hair after wearing it like that for two days.

Nancy’s make up is just a very pale foundation, lots of blush and red lips….then all the black liner, mascara and fake eye lashes I own.

For my Sid, I flat ironed Jake’s hair, teased it so it was nice and spikey, then hair-sprayed it into a pokey punk look.

Topped off with some fake cigs (rolled up note paper!) and we were good to go.

These costumes were a huge success and we were recently featured in UsWeekly for best celeb Halloween costumes!

Fun fact: Jake is wearing my jeans.
