Tutorial: Gold Starry Headband

SO here is my tutorial for my birthday starry headband. I was inspired by this lady, Kat Von D.

All I know about her is that she has a lot of tattoos. She pulls them off and I like them. Also I like her headband. And her red hair. But not her bare stomach.

Here are my starry headband ingredients!

1) Pair of Scissors. I do not recommend haircutting scissors for this.
2) Glue gun (or super glue. or you can sew, that might be cool)
3) Gold Glittery craft paper. I was going to just buy regular card stock and paint/glitter it myself, but I found sheets of this instead!
4) Gold wired ribbon
5) Pen

Now just 3 easy steps!

Cut out 5 or 6 stars of your preference. I googled imaged stars on my iPad and traced them from there! Stencils would be nice if I had any.

Glue Stars onto the gold wired ribbon in desired placement.

Wear the crap out of it at your birthday party.

I promise my birthday is over now. Someone once told me that when you’re older than 25, your birthdays last a week. I made sure that happened this year.

Birthday Photobooth.

After New Years, Jake and I decided we’d be photo boothing much more often. We built this booth in about 2 minutes, so if you look closely, you can see it’s a little jimmied. Anyway, I didn’t really want a party, but I did invite over a couple of my girlfriends to wear dresses and be silly with me. I greeted them with starry halos to wear so they could match my birthday girl hair accessory. I feel like birthdays lose their magic after your 16th, and in hopes of never becoming a “birthday dreader”, I try to keep them fun.

Cue photo booth, party dresses and gold hair accessories!

and cue the snaps.

High fashion animal ears for the win!

Jake was kind of not hanging out with us but I stole a kiss (with cracker and brie in hand)

I also made myself a cake!

I will post a tutorial for my head piece on Friday. I thought it was a great substitute for the cheap plastic tiara!

Do you get gussied up for your birthday?

28.

Thank you so much for the birthday wishes! To celebrate Saturday night I had cake and laughs with 4 girlfriends (and 2 dogs and 1 Jake). There’s more to come, including a tutorial for my headband!

So far, 28 is my jam.

High Fashion Animal Ears

I know this trend is so three years ago, but I didn’t have a hair blog then, so I’m writing about it now. Plus I still think it’s awesome.

Remember a few years ago when Louis Vuitton sent girls down the runway in huge glamorous bunny ears? It was such a daring and show stopping look. I have to admit, the whimsical, dress up loving girl in me adores it. I’ve always been a fairy tale lover, and huge bunny ears just so happen to align with that love perfectly.

To be honest, I don’t think accessorizing with animal ears is all that strange. I mean, if you think about it, what made wearing bows or flowers or feathers in our hair so normal? I would guess that a lot of people might stare if you are wearing bunny ears, but who decides what becomes normal (feathers, flowers, beads) and what is kept for just theme park going children?

I have a veiled pair similar to the second image. Would you wear bunny ears? For dress up, going out or even just to the supermarket for kicks?

For a subtler version, sometimes I tie my American Apparel scarf like pointy ears!

Lana Del Rey’s flowery headpieces.

I was recently introduced (well, my ears were) to Lana Del Rey by my friend Amanda Blair (you guys know her!)

Before I knew she had a pretty face and beautiful hair, I met her voice. She can sing so beautifully that all you can do is listen. I’ve been listening to her for about a month now, and have started to become interested in who this girl actually is. So, yes, she has amazing hair and a gorgeous face (and dude, pouty mouth!)…also, she calls herself a “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” which is important to me because These Boots Were Made For Walkin’ was the first song I ever memorized….But her flowery head pieces are the thing about her. They make me scream out loud and I want one in every color. And I want them to be made out of real flowers like hers.

See below.

I’m always a little sad to find out that some musicians come from a lot of money. It seems like an unfair advantage in the art world. To me, musicians (or any artist) are supposed to struggle in the beginning, it makes their music more authentic. Lana came from millionaire parents who found the right people to create an image for her (her real name is elizabeth grant) including a good plastic surgeon, but at least the girl really can sing. It’s just a little weird to find out that someone who seems so mysterious and interesting is kind of a fake. Despite all the controversy over her, her music is worth checking out. Give Video Games and Blue Jeans a listen!

Also, it’s pretty safe to say that I’m basically in love with floral head pieces. I think I like the top one the best.

American Apparel hair accessories

One of my favorite places to shop for hair accessories, is American Apparel. I only spend about two minutes in the clothes sections, and the rest of the time is hovering over their hair stuff. They have great hats, bows, headbands and clips. Their selection has gotten huge and my collection is growing along with it!

Here are a few of my favorites. I have all of these (but in different colors) and wear them all the time!

Leather bow.

Seen (a snippet of it) here.

Navy Blue Velvet Twist scarf

Chiffon Twist scarf. (I have this one in black)

So the twist scarfs are awesome. There are a million ways you can wear them. They have wires in them, so you can twist them in all different ways. You can make them look like a little rose bud, like in the first picture, or you can twist them to give them a more *”turban” effect. I also like to wear mine with a little bit of a subtle off centered bunny ear look. It’s quite cute!
Seen here!

I also have the grey version of this wool floppy hat, which is the perfect sun hat for winter.

Anyway, I’m basically obsessed with the headwear section of American Apparel. Do you wear hair accessories?
Go here to shop!

*I’ve noticed that pretty much everything is considered a turban these days. This is just a scarf with a thick twisted look for a similar effect.

Have you heard of Dauphines of New York? I’ve seen them in a bunch of different magazines and I love their hair accessories. I was so excited when they emailed me asking if they could send me a hair piece to try out.

Here is what they sent:

I honestly wear it often. Unlike a lot of other pieces I’ve tried, Dauphines’ pieces aren’t at all uncomfortable. It is adjustable and stays on easily.

I love it!

My Denman strawberry scented brush

One of my very favorite hair tools is my Denman scented brush. I have the strawberry one and it reminds me of my dolls and scratch/sniff books from my childhood. I’ve had this brush for over a year and it still smells! I rarely use it on clients, but when I do they all say “MMMmmmm!”.

Get one here! And they’re on sale!

PS I try not to hold a grudge against Denmans for having to learn how to blow dry a bob with them. In my opinion, a Mason Pearson is a way better option for a bob blow dry. But I do love Denmans, regardless. And they serve a wonderful purpose.

Especially when they’re scented.

Hat wearing, apple picking girls.

Over the weekend, some of my girlfriends and I went apple picking upstate. It was a hot and sunny fall day, so we all decided we would wear hats to shade our faces (and also to look cute too). I wore a grey felt floppy hat from American Apparel that I got last year, Jen wore a straw Panama hat of mine from H&M and Amanda Blair wore a cute felt floppy that she got from Old Navy.

Here are some pictures.

Do you like the felt floppy hat for fall and winter? I have kind of always been a hat wearer. I destroyed the newsie hat trend in the early 2000s, inspired by Christina Aguilera of course. (I also had a nose ring for two years to complete the Christina Aguilera “Stripped” album look.)

Emi-Jay

Have you guys heard of Emi-Jay?
It’s a company that makes hair ties, bows and headbands. Here is Dakota Fanning wearing one of the bows.

My friend works for the company, and sent me a little bit of everything from their shop. I have the bow Dakota is wearing and I wear it constantly. I wish I had some good pictures! Actually look at that, I’m wearing it here and here.

And here!

And here!

I thought it would take a few tries to decide if I liked Emi-Jay, but as soon as I put up my hair in that first pony tail, I loved them! The bands are soft and really stretchy, so they aren’t too tight or damaging and they aren’t ever tangley when I take down my buns or ponies.

Here are what the regular hair ties look like

So I had a few of my friends try them too and they all like them. They hold a great pony tail for every hair type (seriously, all you super thick haired girls!). I have been really excited to show them to you  because I know you’ll love them too.

Check them out and make sure you let me know what you think!

*My friend sent over these products not expecting me to review them, but I’ve been extremely pleased with the products and wanted to share them. I am open to product reviews though, so if you have a product you want me to try out, email me here hello@hdofblog.com
