Volume…like in the 70s.

You know I love volume and I know you love volume too. So let’s go into a little detail on a more retro take on volume.

Volume at the bottom, like in the 70s. Like Farrah. What if we started going less volume at the crown, at the roots, and embraced a more massive balance all throughout? I’d say it’s a good idea. It’s a bit more of a flowier fullness and I’d even say that perhaps the full teased crown doesn’t have a monopoly on hot girl volume.

Make room for even, consistent volume. I suspect we’re going to see more all over fullness and less rooty fullness in the coming years.

All over fullness is best achieved by making big curls starting halfway down your hairshaft, then shaking out vigorously when necessary. I have formed a beautiful habit of shaking every 30 minutes. Oh, and don’t forget the product! Oribe Dry Texture Spray will give you that 70s hair.

Do you plan to go for bottom fullness? Or will you keep with your rooty fullness? I wont judge either way…we’re talking about hair here.

Of all the holidays that make for exciting hair endeavors, the Fourth of July is not one of them. Valentine’s day, Christmas, Halloween? All amazing. All endless. But on the Fourth I just feel like protecting my hair from flames and fireworks, and staying cool. It was a scorcher this Fourth, so I only wore my hair down for the photos before pulling it up into a knot. A knot that promised relief from the heat, and safety from flame igniting.

This post…this post is mostly about what I wore. Because I believe in dressing the part (wink Karrie!), and believe in beating a theme to death.

See?

Red heart shaped sunnies, red lip tattoos with hearts on them, white wife beater (hopefully not so american), dyed cut offs, and the most sophisticated red wedges to complete my theme beating.

Tank-Forever 21, Cutoffs-TJMaxx, Wedges-Dolce Vita, Lip tattoo-Violent lips.

These lip tattoos are so fun. I bought loads to try out. They are absolutely for looks alone. Imagine me…starving (no eating), thirsty (no drinking), grumpy (no smiling), and talking like a ventriloquist because that’s what these lips allow for. I’d still say they’re worth it. Cant wait to show you the rest!

Have a great weekend!

Tips for travel (the teaser)

Last weekend I took a trip to Miami. The trip was big enough that I wanted to look cute and go out, but little enough that I didn’t want to check a bag. The thought of leaving my house without every single hair product I own makes me want to weep in my mama’s arms, so where does that leave a girl like me? It leaves me compromising. The sad truth about traveling with hair and rules about liquids is that you probably can’t have your way in it’s entirety.

So here’s what you (I) do.

1. You get some little containers. I got mine at Ricky’s, a beauty supply here in NYC, but you can get them at many other places like Sephora or a local pharmacy. Here are some I found at the Container Store website..

2. You fill them up with your can’t live withouts. For me that’s Creme For Style and Ocean Mist. (And mousse but remember we’re compromising?) I needed a squeezey bottle and a spritzy bottle for these. Obviously shampoo and conditioner can be brought as well if you hate what your hotel provides for you.

My strategy is to wear my hair at it’s most natural state, but enhanced. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve brought a full kit for blow drying…brushes and all, but opted to spend more time enjoying my vacation rather than primping myself. I hate bringing things on vacation that I don’t use (I’ll literally wear 10 pairs of shoes the last day to make sure every pair got worn), so I just don’t bring that stuff anymore. For me, products are they key for wearing my hair natural, so products get brought.

What’s your hair travel plan?

More traveling hair tips to come.

(PS Miami is amazing.)

Holding out for highlights.

I have a little game I like to play called “how long can Reagan go in between highlights”. The motivation behind this game is that my locks are naturally dry and highlights do a number on my hair’s health. Since I’m hoping to grow out my hair long enough to clothe me this winter, I have to be careful with the chemical services. Y’all, this game is a matter of necessity…I just pretend that it’s fun.

So this round of the game lasted since early February. If you remember, I went quite a bit lighter. I held out an impressive 4 and a half months, and have a feeling I can go longer next time.

Here I am before the touch up..roots for days, er, months.

Silly roots!

So, I blocked out a little time at work to have my roots done, but gave special instructions to go easy on the processing (I told my colorist about the game). So she did a light painting at my roots, being careful not to saturate the hair too much with the bleach so that it will have a much more natural effect. It’s very subtle and lots of my true color is still there, just a little brightening up. Especially at the front. She nailed it. Mark my words, I’m going at least six months this time.

(Looking up to the heavens for support during this journey)

I’ve found that the painting technique (free handing the application, rather than using foils) allows you to go much longer between services. How long do you go in-between? Do you have any strategies to growing out your hair healthy and quickly?

See you in December, bleach!

How was your weekend?

I can’t claim that too much excitement happened over the weekend. I worked a lot and caught up on the people I love and some apartment cleaning. Even though it wasn’t all that exciting, it was so nice to check some huge things off my never-ending to do list.

Take, for example, my trip with Karrie to The Mermaid Inn for Sunday Brunch. We were just sitting there enjoying some conversation and pretty eggs in skillets, when we both had this urge to dinglehop our hair. You would have thought it was number 1-20 on my to do list by the way we went for those dinglehoppers. If you haven’t seen The Little Mermaid, then this entire post will be lost on you. If you have, you know that a fork is called a “Dinglehopper” in the sea, and it’s used by the mermaids as a hairbrush. Karrie and I enjoyed our dinglehopping, then enjoyed confused looks from the restaurant staff. It’s a good thing the restaurant was nearly empty because when that urge comes to pretend you’re a mermaid, you just cannot stop yourself…if you’re like me. If you’re not, then the manners your mama devoted her best years to teaching you actually stuck, and you probably don’t go anywheres near your hair while sitting down for a meal. Especially with the utensils made for consuming the meal.

(I bet you all my fictitious millions that I’m going to get a manners book in the mail this week courtesy of my mama with a section highlighted on how to behave at the dinner table like a human lady.)

If you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you know that I could talk endlessly about mermaids, their hair, Brigitte Bardot, her hair, and ways to achieve them. I can’t help myself!

Aside from brushing my hair with a fork at a nice restaurant (the fork didn’t actually touch my hair, I promise.), I bought some new lipstick. It’s called Schiap from Nars, and it’s summer in a tube if you ask me. I have gone on and on to my girlfriends about how I can’t wear anything neon. It doesn’t look good on my skin I say…and there’s all these cool neon clothes I want to buy from Zara I say. Anyway, I was politely interrupted by a girlfriend who pointed out that I wear neon lips all the time. I tried to argue but I realized how wrong I had been all along. Neon lips are my jam.

This post was all over the place. I’m happy to be back from the weekend! Especially since I’m going to be at the beach this entire upcoming weekend. The sooner the week ends, the sooner its the weekend. And I cannot wait.

Hugs and (neon) Kisses.

Hippie Princess hair

Posted in News on June 20th, 2012 by Reagan

The other morning I met up with a friend for brunch and I decided to wear my hair in a way that I like to call “Hippie Princess”. It’s natural and dirty like a hippie, but girly and romantic like a princess. Basically you just take two sections in the front and twist them back, securing with a single pin on each side. It’s a functional style and a nice way to keep my hair out of my face. I also enjoy looking like a hippie princess, so functional or not my hair can expect to be worn this way every now and then.

We had brunch at Elephant and Castle, and talked about taking some pictures after eating. We got all excited about location scouting and how fun we would have finding somewhere awesome to shoot. If any of you are familiar with the West Village, you know that this chain link fence is literally across the street from Elephant and Castle. So in other words, we got lazy. The good news is that in some cultures, there are worse things than lazy.

On the topic of princesses…If I walked into brunch looking like a hippie princess, then Amanda Blair walked into brunch looking like a party princess..or a hairband princess…or a make out princess..or any other kind of messy/huge haired/badass princess that other princesses are jeal’ of.

Her hair was massive. I had to hang my head in small hair shame.

After brunch/photos we walked over to a new little West Village surf shop, Saturdays, where we enjoyed tea and chatting. My surfing coach is good friends with the owners of the joint and I think it’s my new favorite place to loiter. Out of three beach trips this summer, I have successfully ridden one good wave. I don’t know if that’s as impressive as so many people make it out to be, they’re probably just being nice. But I feel like a surfing rockstar. Also don’t be surprised if you see me in a wetsuit and heels. It just feels right.

Outfit details:

Blazer-Zara, Tank and Necklace-Forever 21, Shorts-10 years old from American Eagle, Wedges-Dolce Vita, Sunglasses-Rayban.

Sometimes I feel like I can never have short hair again. Most of the time, these thoughts occur during or after dancing…dancing slash insane hairography. What would I do if I couldn’t whip my hair back and forth?

Well? I would cry.

So here she is, doing hairography like a boss.

These photos have me singing my favorite Gaga song “Dance in the dark”. It’s the best one.

Why do you love your long hair?

Hairography best defined here.
