Thank you so much for the birthday wishes! To celebrate Saturday night I had cake and laughs with 4 girlfriends (and 2 dogs and 1 Jake). There’s more to come, including a tutorial for my headband!

So far, 28 is my jam.

Birthday Hair

It’s my birthday this weekend! I love to take pictures every year on my birthday so when I’m old and wrinkled I can look back on each year to see how my hair and style evolved. I always love to see old photos of my parents when they were my age. My mom was a beautiful hippie with raven hair and my dad was a studly college football player with shoulder length golden waves. I would love it if one day my daughter(s) have an interest in hearing stories from my youth, because otherwise these photos I’m always taking will have been a waste of my time, haha.

These snaps were taken last year on my 27th birthday. We ate and lounged in the Meat Packing District with a few of my girlfriends (and Jake*). It’s the only time I’ve worn that Lanvin for H&M dress. I need to bust that out again!

These pics are funny, because I had extensions. It was the 3rd time in my life that I’ve attempted to have hair extensions, and I’ve decided they’re just not for me. I liked the way they looked every time, but they feel so heavy and take way too long for me to style. I don’t like taking so long on my hair during my normal routine, so I can never leave them in for longer than 2 or 3 weeks before I’m missing my scalp and hair and free time.

So, tomorrow on my birthday, I plan to wear my hair huge (like I love) and wavy and with a little birthday girl headband that I made. I’m having a few girlfriends over and Jake will be there and hopefully some cake will be there too!

I’ll be back Monday with pictures!

*Jake is the best because he actually likes being the only guy when I have girlfriends over. He can take/join in on some girl talk like a champ.

I have some exciting news! I’m going to be writing a weekly hair column over at DivineCaroline. My first post just went up yesterday, and it was inspired by my friend Kat. I’d love for you to go take a look if you have a minute, I think we’re going to have lots of fun over there.

Your love’s favorite hairstyle

Jake likes my hair the most when it’s long, blonde and bang-less. He seems to prefer it straight or with loose waves, rather than my natural wavy/curly business. Kind of Victoria’s Secret modelesque, which is a pretty common look for a guy to prefer I’m guessing.

I’m posting about this today, because it’s our 5 year wedding anniversary! We got married at a little chapel in Las Vegas where I wore my hair like a Victoria’s Secret bride might. It’s these special occasions that I want to look extra pretty for him, so I’m trying to decide how to wear my hair for our date tonight!  Down and wavy or down and straighty?

Does your love have a favorite hairstyle?

My bad hair habit confession.

Confession: I pick my split ends. The worst part is, I actually know how bad this is for my hair, but I can’t stop myself once I get started. I don’t really split them, I just pull them off in one satisfying pluck. I’m pretty much staring my hair straight in the imaginary hair eye while I do it…silently apologizing each time I snap off an end.

I try to “meet my hair halfway” by only plucking at the front bits. They’re my short guys anyway, I don’t mind if they are a little more damaged. But truthfully, they are getting slightly velcro-y. And this bad habit needs to stop.

Do any of y’all have a seriously bad hair habit like mine? Do you trim your own bangs (don’t do it!), twist with your fingers, or maybe skip haircuts? I know a few girls who have bald spots from nervously pulling out their own hair!

PS nose shot!

Frontrunner Gallery

Right now, at the Frontrunner Gallery in Soho there is an exhibit with a photo of me! Aside from his day job, Jake is a freelance photographer. He was asked to submit a photo representing his first love to go along with several other pieces by other artists.

The photo is of me sitting on a bed at a hotel in the Hamptons after a wedding last summer.

The caption on the bottom right says “This girl is my first true love”.

When I arrived at the opening last night, I quickly decided I should have worn my hair curly. Everyone was a little shocked that I was “that girl from the picture”!

The gallery loved Jake’s work so much, they told him that is why they put his photo in the first spot! Pretty cool!

If you are in the neighborhood, stop by for a look see! It’s at 59 Franklin St.

Have a great weekend!

High Fashion Animal Ears

I know this trend is so three years ago, but I didn’t have a hair blog then, so I’m writing about it now. Plus I still think it’s awesome.

Remember a few years ago when Louis Vuitton sent girls down the runway in huge glamorous bunny ears? It was such a daring and show stopping look. I have to admit, the whimsical, dress up loving girl in me adores it. I’ve always been a fairy tale lover, and huge bunny ears just so happen to align with that love perfectly.

To be honest, I don’t think accessorizing with animal ears is all that strange. I mean, if you think about it, what made wearing bows or flowers or feathers in our hair so normal? I would guess that a lot of people might stare if you are wearing bunny ears, but who decides what becomes normal (feathers, flowers, beads) and what is kept for just theme park going children?

I have a veiled pair similar to the second image. Would you wear bunny ears? For dress up, going out or even just to the supermarket for kicks?

For a subtler version, sometimes I tie my American Apparel scarf like pointy ears!

Right on the heels of this post about my love for Iris Apfel, I got an email from a reader telling me about this new film about stylist elderly women…and Iris is one of them! I can’t wait to see it this summer. Also, I see that red haired lady with the mega eyelashes all the time in the West Village. I’m so excited. Check out the trailer below!

Casette

My friend, Seth Smoot (husband of my good friend Kendra) is working on a really cool documentary about the Casette Tape. He and Zack Taylor have a kick starter in hopes to raise enough money to make the entire film. Check out their kickstarter video below, and please donate to their project! They only have a few more days to reach their goal!

Seth and Zack are both so talented, and I’d love to see this film one day! Thanks for supporting them!

I love my “guys”

One of my favorite ways to wear my hair, is pulled up (full up fat twist below, but it can also be a bun or any other up hair) with my guys down. My guys are all the little wisps around my face. It gives it such a romantic, natural look. And who doesn’t love a little romance?

These guys are supposed to look accidental, but they are very intentional. They were undercut to be at just the right parts of my jaw and neck. I prefer some at the hollow of my jaw, the corner of my mouth and just past my chin. My stylist friends and I have a million names for them. I have always called them “guys”, but others call them “fall downs”, “friends”, “wisps” and my favorite- “man catchers”. The “man catcher” is for the guys that fall right around your mouth, all sultry like.

These are pretty easy to do on yourself, and I think I’ll do a little tutorial pretty soon! I don’t usually recommend cutting your own hair, but these are easily covered/blended if they don’t turn out exactly how you like.

Do you like to have some guys around your face when your hair is up? Or are you more of a sleek lady?
