2012 Golden Globes

Did you watch the Golden Globes last night? I did an impromptu live discussion on my facebook page of the show and it was so fun! I think now that it’s award season, I’ll have to do it more!

I have to say, I was very impressed with the women last night. The gowns, the make up, the hair. I wish I could say the same for the men. They were all way too tan. Oh well, they can’t all be as suave as Leonardo DiCaprio I guess.

Alright, here are my favorite looks of the night!
Img

The cut and color of Reese’s dress are perfect. The blood red looked great against her skin and hair. Normally, I would prefer a slicked pony with a structured gown like this, but she looked fresh and beautiful as she was. I couldnt find a photo of her without her hands on her waist, which was a shame because she was a hippy goddess in that red number, and her hands took away from that.

Img

Kate Beckinsale’s gown was such a great color on her. I loved the sharp neckline and her updo was the perfect choice.

Img

Nicole Richie walked onto the red carpet with straight up dinosaur hair, and I was feeling it. You know she had 20lbs of hair extensions in there, and it was beautiful. I want to recreate this look with some wave. Hot!

Img

Zooey Deschanel killed it. She looked so cool out there with her one of a kind Prada gown and her retro hair. I couldn’t find a great profile shot, but she had some kind of sideburn chops that completed the look. I think she may have been wearing a wig, because her hair is normally a lot longer, and I doubt she cut it.

Img

I always love Michelle Williams, but it wasn’t until she walked up onstage to accept her award that I saw how subtly slinky she looked in this gown. She could not be cooler. Showing hardly any skin and almost no jewelry, and she still looks gorgeous. Also, her speech about being a mom had me tearing up. She’s a lady. Oh yeah, and I loved that she brought her best friends Busy as her date.

Img

Claire Danes and Emily Blunt tied for first as my favorite gowns. I could not find a photo of Emily’s gown anywhere though! They both chose dresses that looked perfect with their hair color.

I’ve realized that my favorite gowns are usually sleeveless. I don’t like strapless on me, so I think I naturally lean towards a little fabric up top. There were so many hits on the red carpet, I could have gone on and on. Felicity Huffman? Tilda Swinton? Laura Dern? They all looked awesome. Who am I missing?

Grumpy Old Braid

Jake and I went on a snowboarding trip over the weekend to Utah. On our trip, I made up a very special new braid to go along with my snow hat. I call this, the Grumpy Old Braid! I have always called these hats “Grumpy Old Men” hats, because that movie from my childhood (that I actually never saw)  is nothing but a bunch of men running around in these hats.

I did this braid as a joke to make my friends laugh, but then I decided it was cute and wore it down the slopes! It was nice to know my hat was never going to fall off, haha!

Instagram pic, if you want to follow me, I’m reagangb!

Here are a few other pictures from our trip!

Wallis had a bday!

Below is my brother Nathan, his wife Melanie and my mate Jenny! It was Nathan’s 30th bday.

The gang with our shred sticks.

Backflips on the tramp at Jake’s parents’ house.

It was such a fun weekend, but when we got home we found that our apartment had been broken into! It has been terrible but thankfully nothing we can’t get over in time. I took a few days off from blogging and it’s good to be back!

Lana Del Rey’s flowery headpieces.

I was recently introduced (well, my ears were) to Lana Del Rey by my friend Amanda Blair (you guys know her!)

Before I knew she had a pretty face and beautiful hair, I met her voice. She can sing so beautifully that all you can do is listen. I’ve been listening to her for about a month now, and have started to become interested in who this girl actually is. So, yes, she has amazing hair and a gorgeous face (and dude, pouty mouth!)…also, she calls herself a “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” which is important to me because These Boots Were Made For Walkin’ was the first song I ever memorized….But her flowery head pieces are the thing about her. They make me scream out loud and I want one in every color. And I want them to be made out of real flowers like hers.

See below.

I’m always a little sad to find out that some musicians come from a lot of money. It seems like an unfair advantage in the art world. To me, musicians (or any artist) are supposed to struggle in the beginning, it makes their music more authentic. Lana came from millionaire parents who found the right people to create an image for her (her real name is elizabeth grant) including a good plastic surgeon, but at least the girl really can sing. It’s just a little weird to find out that someone who seems so mysterious and interesting is kind of a fake. Despite all the controversy over her, her music is worth checking out. Give Video Games and Blue Jeans a listen!

Also, it’s pretty safe to say that I’m basically in love with floral head pieces. I think I like the top one the best.

My Favorite Movie Hair: The Girl On The Bridge

Vanessa Paradis plays Adele in The Girl On The Bridge. It’s a french black and white film about an unlucky young girl who at her wits end, decides to jump off a bridge, but is saved by an aspiring knife thrower. He convinces her to join him in the circus as his target. It’s a charming little film, and the hair is beautiful.

Adele starts out with a mid-length bob. It’s perfect with perfect little pixie bangs (that I’m tempted to try). After joining the circus, she chops it into a dramatic pixie, that she wears in finger waves on stage.

Sweet pin curls!

The movie is awesome and you should see it! It’s definitely a netflix must if you like foreign films.

PS Vanessa Paradis is Johnny Depps life partner!

Hair and Beauty tips from Iris Apfel

One of my favorite clients is a beautiful, bubbly young make-up artist at the MAC store in Times Square. I have to be careful when she is in my chair because I could talk to her for so long about beauty products and hair and fashion, that my whole day could easily get backed up. She came in to see me on NYE (they had to close the Times Sq store because of all the tourists!) and we got to talking about lipstick. She told me that Iris Apfel is doing a collaborative line with MAC and I got so excited. You see, Iris Apfel is one of my most major Lady Crushes. (If you don’t yet know, a Lady Crush is like a girl crush, but in a more sophisticated/elderly way). The line is full of bright, matte colors, and according to my client, “Pink Pigeon” is going to be my new favorite lipstick. I can’t wait to see it in person, something tells me that she is right!

The other day, my friend Jana linked to an article of Iris sharing all her views on hair, beauty and fashion. The 90 year old doesn’t believe in plastic surgery, uses Cetaphil, and only dyed her hair one time. The article is inspiring and reminds me why I have such an extreme admiration for Iris and her generation. My Grandma who passed away last year just before turning 90 was very similar in a lot of ways. She wore nice clothes and had her hair and make up done beautifully whether she was leaving the house or not. So very dignified. Their reasons for caring about beauty and hair seemed less vain than our generation somehow.

Anyway, I hope you’ll read the article. My favorite part of the article was when Iris was talking about plastic surgery, she said, “I think if women put some more of the time and money they put on their heads in their heads, they’d be better off. I mean, nobody’s going to think you’re thirty-two, so what’s the point?”.

And one more “I don’t like trends anyway—I like tradition.”

Well said Iris, Well said. What a cool lady.

What do you think of my Lady Crush Iris Apfel?

New Year’s Eve party hair fun time goodness.

I have recently realized that a lot of people share my same opinion about NYE…it’s not that cool. In fact, I’m not really going to do anything if it requires me leaving my apartment building or neighborhood. It’s cold, it’s packed with tourists and it’s hard to get a cab. So when Jen told me a few weeks ago that she wanted to throw a party, I was very excited because she is my neighbor just two floors down. Talk about “Friends” right?

After listing the reasons I hate NYE above, now I’ll list the reasons I love it:
Fancy hair, Fancy make up (I always wear fake eyelashes), Fancy clothes.

So after work, I came home to get fancy. Jen and AmandaBlair came up and I asked them if I could do their hair. I was feeling a half up theme for the night. I did a cute little “hair bow” flare on myself, which felt quite festive, then I did ABs and halfway through her hair I heard a Gwen Stefani song, so at the last second I did a little Gwen Stefani swirl in the back. It was mostly 1960s with just the slightest twinge of a 40s flare. For Jen I did a quickie half up fat twist but with a braid flare instead of a swirl flare. I love a little hair flare, hooray!

Since we are just a few steps away from each other, Jake and I set up a photobooth in our apartment for Joe and Jen’s party guests to come up and partake in. It was pretty fun. We put up tinsel and had props to play with. We had a great time getting our sills out! I even had fun cleaning up all the tinsel the next day.

One perk to being at home is that I was able to do an outfit/hairfit change halfway through the party. Do you every have the urge to do an outfit or hairfit change? I went from my fancy golden girl grandma vintage top, to my flapper princess dress.

How was your NYE?

Also, Ta Da!
Thank goodness my heel didn’t destroy my silk dress!
