Michelle Williams’ loose waves.

Michelle Williams is a great example of my favorite kind of hair. She always has a great cut, and when it’s long, she keeps it healthy and beautiful with simple styles.

I love this photo of her soft blow dry. Just the right amount of volume, wave and texture. To get this look, you would blow dry with lots of volume at the roots. Once your hair is dry, take large sections and curl mid-shaft (like the messy waves tutorial) with a 1 inch curling iron. You are going for more of a bend than a curl, so you just need to turn the iron a little, maybe once or twice at the most.

Finish up with some Ocean Mist and shake it all about.

Congratulations, you are now my newest girl crush!

Does anyone know where this photo comes from? I’m sure it’s a legit shoot and I’d love to credit the magazine and photographer if anyone knows that source

Wigs for a styling event

Last month my salon participated in an event in Brooklyn for stylists and colorists. Some platform work was done (cutting and styling), and the owners of my salon both had their work showcased (one for color, one for wigs). We spent a few weeks working our fingers to the bones on the wigs my boss, Larry, designed. He is really an artist and it is so fun to learn from him. He comes up with these ideas, and works with us between clients, asking for our advice and welcoming any ideas. It’s so great to make such beautiful pieces as a team!

This is literally a swimming cap that he hammered spikes into. He carved out one side and added diamonds, and the other side is wiry braided extensions.

Here are some wefts I turned into wide, thin fishtails that we never ended up using.

I only worked on this beautiful braided mess for a little bit. It is braids of all different shapes, sizes and textures. Some are uniform, some are uneven and messy. There is also rope in there and some of the hair has been burned. I tried it on and it was so heavy and cool feeling. It is kind of a modern artsy take on the Victorian era.

I helped make this wig earlier in the year for a different shoot. I sewed approximately one million wefts of extensions including the blue and yellow/green ones. It’s actually a normal wig turned inside out with extensions sewn underneath. The feathers are actually a trimming from Mood that we made look like a cap. This wig was hard work, but my boss had a completely new vision for it with this event. I got to wrap and set it in perm rods, which we all know I love to do!

Here is the final product at the event. I wish I had some closer shots of each piece!

I love this one so much. It looked perfect on the model.

Work friends, hooray!

Sometimes it’s so nice to do some non-traditional work like this. I gets that creativity flowing!

Aussie Heat Protecting Shine Spray and Smoothing Serum

Good Morning! In our fifth and final video in our Aussie series, I’ll be showing you some ways to prevent damage on your hair from heat styling using the Aussie Heat Protecting Shine Spray.  I’ll be doing a natural hand-blow dry on my model, Amanda Blair, before using a curling iron to create very soft and loose waves. To finish up the style, I’ll be using the Aussie Smoothing Serum, that will help the style looking smooth and shiny all day.

The Reverse Ombre (ish) done right!

I recently talked about the reverse ombre and why it’s a bad idea. But there is another way to do it that looks good and isn’t so much maintenance.

Instead of painting the highlights on to gradually go from light roots to dark ends, you can do your highlights on top like normal, and do a single process underneath. By going a few shades darker underneath, you are actually creating a very natural look. Naturally the sun wouldn’t lighten that hair, because it’s not ever reaching it. If you have layers, even long layers, the darker underneath part will peek through the lighter parts, making a similar “reverse ombre” effect. There is actually very minimal damage with color like this, because you don’t have to do highlights underneath, and that saves your ends from a lot of grief! I had my hair like this for several years. I would do a 7N or 8N underneath, and do highlights on top every few months to keep it bright.

Here are a few pictures!

You guys, I don’t know why I just don’t enjoy J-Simps’ company. Her hair is a good example of what I’m talking about though.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s is my favorite!

Nicole always has great hair. Not because she has naturally great hair, but because she has a great stylist.

Way back in beauty school, we called this look The Shadowbox. We did a more severe look like Christina Aguilera though. Back in 2002, I loved the platinum blonde with red or black underneath. You couldn’t pay me to do it now. Ha.

Would you try this look?

Hat Storage

I have had a very annoying time trying to find a good way to store my hats. I have wanted to find a cool antique mannequin head for a while, but I’ve never seen one in a thrift store, and the ones on ebay I have found were in the $400 range. So, the one I ended up getting doesn’t have a charming finger wave or lovely scary drag make up, but I think the androgyny of it is kind of funny. Plus I love the color so much and I think it will look great with a hat on it once it gets here.

The only problem is that it doesn’t really solve my hat storage problem at all. Just the storage of one hat. And factoring in the space that the mannequin will take up means that I am totally forgetting the purpose of the original hat storage problem.

I’m just smart and practical like that.

PS We have reached 1,500 (plus!) facebook likers so I will be doing a giveaway next week. I’m so excited. Remember, every new 500 facebook likes, there will be a new giveaway!
