Cassie from Skins

I’m so excited because a week from tomorrow, I’m going to London for the first time! I absolutely cannot wait, and if any of you have some wildly exciting London suggestions, I welcome them in the comments. Hooray!

So, since I’ve got London on the brain, I’ve been thinking of one my favorite tv characters of all time. Cassie from the British show “Skins” was played by Hannah Murray. Cassie is a sweet, but lost teenager with all kinds of problems. When Cassie was on the screen, I couldn’t look away. She was such a lonely and confused little girl that I just wanted to care for. The acting was amazing and just thinking about it makes me want to Netflix the whole series again.

Another reason I love Cassie so much, is her hair and clothes. She always had some kind of cute touch to her hair. Maybe a bow or clip, messy waves or a piece here or there pinned up. Nothing every too done, which is my kind of style. I love the look of just spending 2 minutes to jazz up your hair. If the 2 minute style is a contest, then Cassie wins!

Isn’t she amazing? Did you ever watch that show?

(PS I’m not talking about the short-lived American version of Skins on MTV. The British one was amazing.)

Recently, Jake and I worked on a video shoot with Aussie. The focus of the videos, is to learn how to solve some of our most common hair problems using Aussie products.

I’m so excited to be able to show you all the first of the five videos. My model, Erin has been a client of mine for a while now and she loves a smooth and straight blow dry. In this video, we’ll be using the Aussie Spray Gloss to show how you can prevent dull looking ends and get all over smoothness.

Visit the Aussie site to learn more about this, and other Aussie Stylers.

Hat wearing, apple picking girls.

Over the weekend, some of my girlfriends and I went apple picking upstate. It was a hot and sunny fall day, so we all decided we would wear hats to shade our faces (and also to look cute too). I wore a grey felt floppy hat from American Apparel that I got last year, Jen wore a straw Panama hat of mine from H&M and Amanda Blair wore a cute felt floppy that she got from Old Navy.

Here are some pictures.

Do you like the felt floppy hat for fall and winter? I have kind of always been a hat wearer. I destroyed the newsie hat trend in the early 2000s, inspired by Christina Aguilera of course. (I also had a nose ring for two years to complete the Christina Aguilera “Stripped” album look.)

My Beauty Secrets: Two Minute Make-Up

I make my mornings before work very busy. I work out, I read, I clean sometimes, I watch reality tv, I blog, I read blogs. It’s when I’m my busiest. I am a morning person and I just don’t really sleep in.

Being a morning person, and not needing to leave for work until 20 after 11 on most days, I crack up thinking about how I’m still almost always rushing to get ready for work even though I’ve been awake for 5 hours already. I’m throwing together an outfit, brushing my teeth while putting on my shoes and running all over the place making my lunch and looking for my keys.

On those days, I literally do my make up in under two minutes. I examine my biggest flaws, and plan my attack. I pick the most essential items and run away with them. Here they are.

Under eye hideous bags of destruction.
Nothing makes me feel older than I am and more poorly rested than under the eye bags. For that f-bomb of a problem, I use the big guns known as Make Up Forever. This stuff is no joke. I got it at Sephora. I put a tiny dot under each eye and pat it on until it’s all blended.

Next is powder. All over my face guys. I use MAC mineral powder in Light.

On to mascara. I rarely leave the house without mascara. I only put it on my top lashes and I only do about 4 or 5 swipes on each eye. Even though I don’t use all that much, I just can’t imagine wandering this city with naked looking eyes. Ew. Just ew. I love Smashbox because it has a wonderful huge wand and it just applies so perfectly. I love this mascara.

Finally, I finish up with this.

I have never known what this is called. I guess Rosebud? I just call it my lip tin. I love this because it smells and tastes nice, but also because it was one of my first beauty products. I remember using this when I was a little girl. Only the case had a sliding lid. I used it until there was nothing left. Then I cleaned out all the slime and kept secret treasures in there. I bought this at Anthropology for basically double the normal cost, but you can also get some online for sure. I guess just google “Lip Tin from Reagan’s childhood”.

There you have it! My quickiest of the quicks make up routine!

Have you guys heard of Emi-Jay?
It’s a company that makes hair ties, bows and headbands. Here is Dakota Fanning wearing one of the bows.

My friend works for the company, and sent me a little bit of everything from their shop. I have the bow Dakota is wearing and I wear it constantly. I wish I had some good pictures! Actually look at that, I’m wearing it here and here.

And here!

And here!

I thought it would take a few tries to decide if I liked Emi-Jay, but as soon as I put up my hair in that first pony tail, I loved them! The bands are soft and really stretchy, so they aren’t too tight or damaging and they aren’t ever tangley when I take down my buns or ponies.

Here are what the regular hair ties look like

So I had a few of my friends try them too and they all like them. They hold a great pony tail for every hair type (seriously, all you super thick haired girls!). I have been really excited to show them to you  because I know you’ll love them too.

Check them out and make sure you let me know what you think!

*My friend sent over these products not expecting me to review them, but I’ve been extremely pleased with the products and wanted to share them. I am open to product reviews though, so if you have a product you want me to try out, email me here hello@hdofblog.com

A little of my Sunday shoot.

I did some hair at a music video shoot all day on Sunday. It was for a British DJ named Dego. The video was supposed to be set in the late 1950s/early 60s. I love that kind of hair, so I was thrilled to join in on the action. I only brought my phone with me, so these crappy pictures are all I have to show for it, but the producer took a few stills and I’m hoping to get them soon!

The is the lead girl, Gizem. The pretty blonde in the background, Stephanie had smooth soft waves after I combed out her set. I also did several mens’ hair, which was basically the Pete Campbell/Don Draper look. You know, loads of greasiness combed through with a side part.

This was the make up girl, Pam. She had pink, purple, orange and yellow hair. So I asked if I could Halo her.

I can’t wait for the music video to come out so I can show you all!

My Beauty Secrets: Starting with the face

I have been meaning to write about make up and non-hair beauty products for a while. I even filmed a tutorial with Jake a while back that was accidentally erased and never re-shot. So, I thought I’d do a little series of a few tips and products I love.

Want to know a confession? I’m not really that girly.

I mean, clearly I’m super girly…what with all the lipstick and ruffles and heels I wear, but would you believe that I really don’t do all the girly stuff that most of my friends do? I do my own nails 99% of the time, I don’t get facials, I don’t get waxed  (tmi?), I don’t tweeze my eyebrows and I rarely wear perfume.

I do love beauty products though. I could go to Sephora, MAC, NARS or even the beauty aisle at Target and look at every single product they sell. Reading what each product does, investigating new colors of lipstick, etc. So let’s dish about my favorite products shall we?

In this post, I’m going to talk about the face. Specifically skin.

So, to be honest, I’m super lazy about washing my face, and I generally just use baby wipes to wash off my make up. Any dermatologists/estheticians out there disgusted by this? Is it bad? I don’t know, I was using some Neutragena wipes for a while and they didn’t seem that different. I can’t be sure, but I think I use Pamper’s brand. That just made me laugh to type.

My favorite facial scrub is from Keihl’s. It’s their Pineapple-Papaya Facial Scrub. Get ready to see a lot of Keihl’s products on here. Their skin stuff is the best there is.

Next is the Keihl’s Avocado Eye Cream. This stuff is so rich and refreshing. My friend Linda gave me a tip to keep this in the refrigerator. The cold eye cream feels like heaven under my eyes. Those old bags of mine…

My favorite daily moisturizer is also from Keihl’s. I really wish they were paying me to say this. My only complaint is that daily moisturizers almost never come with an SPF higher than 15. I would like to see 30 in my daily SPF.

Last but not least (and also not Keihl’s or a baby’s butt product!), Burt’s Bees Night Cream!

This is everything you want in a night cream. It is so rich and thick and I wake up the next morning feeling like I should put on some diamonds to match this fancy skin of mine. This is way too heavy to wear during the day (it’s shiny), but it doesn’t make me break out at all and it really is just so awesome. Even Jake uses it to fancy up his face. Burt’s Bees has a day cream that is great too, but it doesn’t have SPF and I find that I just plain need that in my face skin’s life.

What are your favorite moisture/face wash products? Do you use Burt’s Bees or Keihl’s?

Next week I’ll be posting my “Two Minute Make-up” routine.

I love this video. It is so cute. I’m so impressed with the way it was filmed, the wardrobe and hair/make up is so great.

My friend from work and I have come up with a challenge for ourselves to master hair from each decade, and when I saw this little video, it got me even more excited for our challenge! We’ll be starting it pretty soon, and I’m really hoping to share pictures with you all along the way. Yippee!

What’s your favorite decade? I love the 60s and 70s, but the silent film era is pretty deserving of a mention too!
