Hats in London

I want to share some photos of my London trip soon, but first (and most importantly) I want to talk about the hats!

I’ve written about my love for the British hat culture before and now that I’ve seen it in person my love for it only burns deeper. First I tried on a few in a vintage store.

Then on my second day in London, as if by magic, I walked past a wedding. Hats galore. Now I’m pretty sure this was a rich and powerful wedding, because the bride and groom were married in St. Paul’s Cathedral, and that is pretty serious. Also, we caught a peek at a program and later googled the couple to find they are rich and powerful (and sexy!). This might explain the wonder and amazement of the hats. They were spectacular.

I really must invest in more hats.

Hair Answers: Dealing with cowlicks

Q by Heather: I’d like to get your take on “cowlicks”.  I have hair that looks very similar to yours, maybe a little thinner, and I have HUGE issues with the whorl at my crown.  It’s fine when I wear it curly, but when I go straight it seems that no matter how I blowdry or tease, after a very short time you can see my hair start to split in the back….it drives me nuts!  I end up having to wash my hair way more often than I’d like because it’s the only way I can get it under control after sleeping on it.  Any suggestions?

A by Reagan: Heather, you’re on the right track! There are a few tricks to dealing with cowlicks that I have found very helpful. The first trick is to leave the hair in that area a little longer. You don’t want to be cutting short layers or fringes where there are cowlicks. The extra length with help weigh down the hair, making it more manageable. My next tip is to comb and blow dry that area first, while the hair is still quite wet. Make sure you are blow drying against the grain of the hair, this will help to manipulate that little tuft to lay down a little more. My final tip, is instead of shampooing your whole head in the morning just spray down that area and start over. My favorite blow dryer is the Twin Turbo, give that a shot. They range from $90-$150 on Amazon. And for the millionth time, use a nozzle!!

Cowlicks are such needy little things, right? They love all the attention like that one girl from highschool! haha. Good luck!

Coping with hard water.

Both times I’ve been to Europe, I’ve noticed that the water is very hard on my hair. While I was in London, I only shampood once in an attempt to prevent drying out my hair. My hair just seems to be more brittle than the average Jane’s, so maybe this is more of a problem for me than most.

So along with cutting down on shampooing, product is also a great way to lock in some extra moisture. Here are my favorite hair oils!

Redken Glass

Je Veux Argan Oil

SachaJuan Shine Serum

Aussie Smoothing Serum

I call products like these “Hair Drinks”.

Give your hair a drink when it’s thirsty!

PS I had a wonderful time in London and I am so excited to show you some photos from my trip!

Have you heard of Dauphines of New York? I’ve seen them in a bunch of different magazines and I love their hair accessories. I was so excited when they emailed me asking if they could send me a hair piece to try out.

Here is what they sent:

I honestly wear it often. Unlike a lot of other pieces I’ve tried, Dauphines’ pieces aren’t at all uncomfortable. It is adjustable and stays on easily.

I love it!

Beautiful Center Parts

I don’t know where this photo comes from, but I love it. Hair to your waist, long flowy dresses and a center part. It’s kind of my dream.

I actually think this is a photo from a cult type “family”, and a few of the wives are clearly pregnant. Which is kind of weird, but I still love it.

Anyway, I am the kind of girl whose hair naturally  wants to have a deep part. I have to force it in the center, and I think at this point it (it meaning my hair) is almost used to it.

The best tip for forcing your hair to part some where it doesn’t want to, is to part it when it is wet. Like sopping wet right out of the shower. If you need to, you can blow dry it into place.

My Denman strawberry scented brush

One of my very favorite hair tools is my Denman scented brush. I have the strawberry one and it reminds me of my dolls and scratch/sniff books from my childhood. I’ve had this brush for over a year and it still smells! I rarely use it on clients, but when I do they all say “MMMmmmm!”.

Get one here! And they’re on sale!

PS I try not to hold a grudge against Denmans for having to learn how to blow dry a bob with them. In my opinion, a Mason Pearson is a way better option for a bob blow dry. But I do love Denmans, regardless. And they serve a wonderful purpose.

Especially when they’re scented.

Dirty Hair at Storm King

Jake and I (and my dirty hair) took a trip upstate to Storm King Art Center over the weekend. It’s huge-beautiful fields and streams and ponds and wooded areas that have giant sculptures all over the place. If you have the chance, you have to go. I would recommend this time of year. The air was cool and breezy and I ate a pumpkin donut on the way up.

Plus I just love fall. I’m so original right?

Anyway, I filmed a bunch of tutorials with Jake and our friend, Hadley over the weekend. One of those tutorials included “how to use dry shampoo”. While Hadley and I were talking about it, she asked a great question…

“Do you use it every day that you don’t shampoo?”

My answer is no. For instance, I shampood on Wednesday, let it do what it wanted on Thursday, dry shampood on Friday, did nothin’ on Saturday, and dry shampood on Sunday. I just kind of gauge what it needs.

So there is your Monday morning dry shampoo tip! Enjoy a few Storm King photos! All taken by Jake.

PS Jake and I went to a 1970s themed costume party on Saturday night, and these glasses were part of my costume. I decided to throw them on again on Sunday morning, even though they are completely clear with no proscription or anything. Silly.

Here are a few other posts on dry shampoo!
