Vintage Beach Turban

I just got back from a trip to Palm Springs, CA. It was a great trip and I hope to write a quick post about it later for you all. Something that Palm Springs is known for, is there amazing thrift stores and old mid-century feel to the town. It was totally a getaway for Hollywood folks in the 60s.

I went to 3 different places for vintage shopping, I swept those three places clean, but I think my favorite find is this beach turban. It is so Barbie pattern/colors, it reminds me of being a little girl. I wore this to the pool on Saturday and felt so cute. Like *I was a Barbie in Palm Springs in the 60s.

Funny story…I later was chatting with a guy at my friend’s party and he asked if I had been to the pool yet, and I said “yes! i was there today. i was the one in the turban.” I totally was just joking and didn’t think he’d have noticed me. And he said “Oh yeah! I saw you! My girlfriend was making fun of you! She was looking at you and saying ‘who wears that?’.”

Haha. My friend and I were speechless. Actually, maybe we weren’t. Is giggling considered speech? Because that is what we were. Giggling. Anyway, it was funny, because wearing the turban had never crossed my mind as something so weird.

Do you like my beach turban? Don’t you think we should start accessorizing with lots of hats like the Britts do? And the fancy people from the 60s? I do.

*In high school I was voted “Barbie Look Alike” for my senior superlatives. This is something I’m still very proud of.

oh my gosh! i can’t believe that. you know, some people are so quick to put others down, but they are mostly the people that are perpetually worried about what others think of them. i bet she’d never have the self confidence to wear a beach turban! i think you are totally awesome and because you have confidence, you pull off everything you wear super well…something all of us women should learn from you so we wouldn’t worry so much about what other people say!

Love the turban, and you look fabulous!! I live on the west coast and people out here just aren’t as daring when it comes to fashion, in my opinion. If they haven’t seen it in an ad or on a celebrity, they assume it isn’t fashionable. I agree with what Margaret said about self confidence; when you have that, you can wear anything well.

Not sure everyone can pull it off, but you certainly can! Keep on rocking the turban and random fun hats. :)

style is so personal, which is what makes it ‘style’. you can wear the turban, and so much vintage, and look cool not costume-y.

probably the girl doesn’t *get* vintage. people can be so blunt with their remarks, blurting what they’re thinking without realizing how it comes across.

like the elder aunt of mine who looked at my feet in my flip flops and goes, “why are your toes all curled up like that?” making me feel forever self-concious about my indeed-ugly toes.

i was wearing an adorable beret with a flower on it to a concert with a friend. my whole look was great and more, i loved it like you loved your turban look. but i was laughed at in the ladies room for my hat. i didn’t hear it, my friend did. in fact, the person told me to my face she thought my hat was dumb, but i totally missed it. my friend wanted to slap her, and it went right over my head.

i looked cute in my beret and was happy wearing it. so go on with your turban and wouldn’t it be nice if people knew to filter their comments? but then we wouldn’t have these great stories to tell, now, would we?!

People are so silly. I was in Pullman, WA wearing the “party bun” and I got laughed and pointed at. Rock the turban.

I like the turban! I think it’s very unique and cute, and it’s a shame someone wasn’t open-minded enough to appreciate it even though it might not be for them personally. Although I do have to wonder what happened to “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” The fashion critic’s boyfriend kinda stuck his foot in his mouth there, but to each his/her own, I suppose. I love checking out my mom’s 60s and 70s stuff. I’ve worn her jean jackets with the patches on them (usually with some curse word in those rebellious hippie days), bell-bottoms, big costume jewelry, wigs (lol). I think if you feel cute and comfortable in what you’re wearing, doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

It seems that hipsters can’t get enough of the Hilda Ogden biker look. It sounds so wrong.

And yet . . . why does a tiny part of us think it’s quite cool?
