Tutorial: Low Messy Side Bun

I think this might be one of my favorite tutorials to date. This is a style that I wear very often, and you’ll see why when you watch the video. It can be perfected in a matter of minutes! If I don’t get 50 emails with LMSB photo submissions, I don’t know what will make you happy, guys. So hairies, I’m hoping for 50 photos. Do it!

I love it – I can’t wait for my hair to grow out so I can start styling it more – It was practically shaved about 6 months ago so its slowly getting there :)

I wish I had enough hair to try this–you make it look so easy and your hair is beautiful! You are seriously making me consider some clip in/on hair.

I am trying this asap, I am hoping I can do this with longish hair.

And girl, I could watch you do hair all day long, not to sound like a creeper. You totally need your own show.

Yay!!!! Just today I was thinking I needed to look to see if you had already done this and if not, request it immediately. You saved me the effort. :)

Just for reference – do you have very thick hair? There’s no way my hair would be held in a wad with one small plastic band… What would you recommend for thick hair? A rubber band to hold the pony tail and one or two more to hold the bun?

    ReplyReply
  6. Reagan Says:

@Grete: Hi Grete! I have medium thickness. Those plastic bands can hold a surprisingly huge amount of hair. But it sounds like your hair is mad-thick, so I’d say use a couple! Or use whatever elastics you like. I do recommend avoiding doing a pony tail first though, because it will take away the ‘effortless’ look of it. But go ahead and try that if nothing else is working. Good luck!

I’ll probably be doing this everyday now. I make my low messy side bun way more complicated and I need to stop it!

P.S. You look so pretty in this video! Well you always look awesome but there is something just great about you in this video and I think its those lips. I love that color on you!

This is one of my favorite hair styles as well. Sometimes I call it a chignon to sound fancy. I always get compliments on it, eventhough it’s really just a quick mess of bobby pins and unruly hair. Thanks for the turtorial! Also, I’ve been wanting a tie neck blouse like yours forever, super cute!

This is how I’ve always done my messy buns, but I’ve also always wondered how other people style them. So glad you did this and now I don’t feel like I’m doing it “wrong!”

I do have to say that I’ve always worn my messy buns in the back, but today I had the courage to try it on the side…and I got tons of compliments! :)

I also love the music you have used – in fact the Yelle song has become one of my favorites. I even wrote about it on my blog and linked back to yours, cos this is where I discovered it! It’s on the piece “When All The Songs Make Sense”
Thank you and keep posting the tutorials, very helpful

I just used this tutorial to create an updo for a gala we attended over the weekend. I curled my hair a bit more and pinned the bun more for a more structured look. Then I curled my side swept bangs in a retro 20′s style. Everyone complimented my hair all night and asked which salon I went to. I was so proud to tell them I had done it myself! (total first for me!). They also said i looked straight out of boardwalk empire! Thanks for making it so easy!! I’ve always been intimidated to try new things with my hair, but you make it so easy & fun. Love your blog!!!

I’ve always wanted to know how to do this style so perfectly!
It never occurred to me to create the bun, and then use the tie.
I’d always try to make a ponytail first.
No wonder! It works great! Thanks!

Bobby pins… And a smaller elastic, THAT’S why mine never came out very well before! I like to do the diagonal Katniss braid (from The Hunger Games) but I don’t have enough hair to do a full braid down my shoulder, so I just do a side bun, if I do it your way, it’s sure to look a-mazing! :)
