Tutorial on Blow Dry with Volume and Body

Here is our fun little blow dry tutorial. I’m so excited to get it up! I have been putting off this tutorial for a while, because it is really hard to explain a blow dry properly. There is a lot of information that you forget you ever learned once it becomes second nature to you. Then you’re whipping them out just like you’d tie your shoe.
There is so much info, that I would have to have someone doing a blow dry in front of me so that I can tell them “do this here or do that there”. There are wrist movements and brushing patterns, they are really quite complicated!
Two things I forgot to mention: The smaller the brush, the more curl and volume you’ll get (but it can look funny on too long of hair). And make sure you blow dry working your way from the roots down instead of drying the ends first and working upwards.
Also, rough drying=getting the water out just with your hands and blow dryer before you start trying to create the shape with the brush and sectioning..
I hope this all makes sense! I’m a little nervous about how this will go down. Make me proud!
(hint: the video is pretty long, so it might be kind of choppy, depending on connection speed, unless it is allowed to completely load before watching)
So i’ve been practicing this and I am getting pretty good. I’m not Reagan level yet but I’m getting better. I’ve realized getting the right brush is HUGE!

Amanda Blair you have gorgeous hair! This may seem like a silly question, but what time of hair pins were you using? They didn’t leave dents and seemed to hold the hair better than a simply bobby pin!

Gorgeous. I love her coloring too. Do you have any suggestions for affordable brushes that will get the job done right? Also, what shine spray did you use?

What type/brand of hair dryer do you recommend?
Thank you so much! I’ve never used a round brush before, I’ve always just used a flat brush to blow dry my hair. I just need to start practicing.
This has been amazing! I have a round brush, but I hadn’t been using it. I don’t need to try to get volume- I have tons of it, but the round brush is definitely helpful for eliminating frizz and it cuts down on flat ironing time! Also, I just bought some redken outshine, and I love it. This and the morocanoil line are my hair miracles!

Great tutorial! Looks frickin amazing. It’ll take some serious practice, but i think it’s handy to be talked through it! Guess it helps that Amanda’s got perfect hair eh?!

@Kelly: Hi, Kelly. Thanks for the props! For the lighting in that shot, I just used a single strobe with a 42″ reflector umbrella raised to about 1′ over her head angled at her face and set about 5 feet to her front/right (camera left).

It would not be an understatement for me to say this tutorial has changed my life. Seriously. I’m not even into doing my hair. I’m almost morally opposed to spending more than 10 minutes on my hair in the morning…however, after watching this I tried a few of the tricks and I can now get my hair to look about 158% better than ever before in my life in the same amount of time! Where have you been all my life?! You’re amazing. I’m totally hooked on your blog now.
