I got an email from a reader who wanted to know if she could still wear her hair long even though she is now in her 30s. She read something online that said no, and wanted my opinion. Well, my opinion is YES. Want to know if I think you can wear your hair long in your 40s? Yes! I think you can. I have lots of long haired clients in their 30s and 40s who I think look great. They keep it trimmed, healthy and styled.

If you are still worried, here are some pictures of beautiful ladies to convince you.

Reese-34.

Kate-37.

Jennifer-40

You want long hair in your 30s? You wear that long hair. And you love it.

(In case any of you are wondering, I would wear Jennifer’s dress everywhere if I had it. Club, party, gym, bed. Everywhere.)

Not to say I’m a certified hairstylist, but shouldn’t the rule be that anyone who can grow out long, healthy, beautiful locks of hair should also be able to rock it, no matter what your age is?
If I was a hairstylist, I would probably encourage it after 30 (if your locks are awesome) because if anything its just going to make you look youthful. Let’s give those mom haircuts a break. ;)

I want long hair so bad…I’m thinking of trying it again, even though I said I wouldn’t again for a long time…and this time, I’ll get it trimmed regularly, take better care of it, and attempt to actually style it instead of just letting it hang. Maybe then it will work out well for me?

Aren’t those actresses wearing extensions? Because I don’t know many women that age with thick, healthy long hair like that…

renee, it’s possible they might be wearing extensions. i’m pretty sure reese is. however, the point of the post is to discuss if it is age appropriate to have long hair in your 30s, or not.

also, i have tons of clients in their 30s, 40s and even 50s with healthy, thick and shiny hair. but if you want long hair, or to thicken up your thin hair, there is nothing wrong with putting in a few extensions. it opens a big window for people who can’t seem to grow their hair out healthy!

    thanks for your comment!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves! Women who get a “certain age” and whack off their hair… You could even go farther, and show women who are lovely in their 50′s, 60′s and 70′s. Susan Sarandan, Mary Steenburgen, Jacklyn Smith and many, many others! Keep your hair, ladies!

Reagan, when you are growing out your hair, how often do you recommend it should be trimmed?

Hell yeah!!! I don’t know why women decide to cut their hair all off as they begin to age and their features get more pronounced …that is the time you need you long hair to soften up your features and distract from the deepening lines on your face {in my humble opinion, of course} In fact, I just wrote about it today. I played with my hair length a lot when I was young and now, I just keep it long …different variations of long, lol.

okay …but it’s true, if your hair is limp or thin, it may look better in a shorter do …but still, keep it soft around your face

Thank you!!! I turn 33 next month and have no plans on cutting my hair at all…It’s weird when women think they reach a certain age and cut it above their shoulders. My hair tends o be easier to deal with longer than short anyways…plus my hubby say “NO WAY” to cutting my hair! Thanks for posting :o )

To the person who said folks that age don’t have healthy thick long hair. I just turned 40 and I have quite thick long perfectly healthy hair. I have other friends who do too. Do you really think after 30 your hair gets that unhealthy? I’m just shocked anyone would think that….Oh and I just had 2 babies in case you think menopause happens then too….

Sorry to sound bitter, but really??

Thank-you! Thank-you! Thank-you! Im growing my hair back long & worried that at 30 by the time I got my length back after growing out a bob- I might be running out of time to get away with long locks. So glad to know its not a big no no. If your a long hair girl it just doesn’t feel right any other way!
