Tutorial: Messy Waves

Here’s our latest tutorial. I’ve had several requests for messy waves, and also for Blake Lively waves. So since they are the same thing, here it is! Keep in mind, I like to use the smaller curling iron, but if you want to try different barrel sizes with the same technique, it would be beautiful I’m sure. I say the bigger you go, the smaller the sections should be. Enough, let’s get messy.

PS I love your tutorial suggestions. If you would like to request a tutorial, email me at hello@hdofblog.com

Party Hair

This year for New Year’s, Jake and I will be volunteering at a New York Road Runners race in Central Park. I am sad to miss out on jazzing up my hair, make-up and clothes, so I decided to throw a few suggestions on here for you!

Jessica Alba’s teased pony tail is perfect and simple. Especially if you are going crazy with your make up or jewelry. Just tease the front and top of your hair/head, smooth out, and throw into a pony! Or a bun. Either way, hot.

Dian Krueger’s side braid is another cute option. I like this look because I see so many possibilities of variation. It’s romantic and soft. Plus Diane is one of those ladies who pretty much nails every look.

If you love to wear your hair down (I’ve been there! I have gone through phases where I only wear my hair down for months and months) you can always do the safe, but never dull, loose waves. Rachel Bilson looks amazing. Also, PINK lips! I have a great shade from a no name pharmacy company that I don’t know how I found.

What are your plans? Do you do fancy on New Year’s?

Pretty Curls.

I’m basically obsessed with these messy, but tight curls. It’s polished enough for a holiday party if you ask me! Especially with a punch of eye or lip color. Maybe tucked behind one ear and pinned with a little ribbon clip or something like that…nice right?

This is a pretty easy look to achieve. You want to start with some mousse after towel drying, then blow dry all messy-like with your head upside down for volume. Part your hair (not a clean party though, all rough and ragged). Wrap small sections of hair around a 3/4 or 1 inch curling iron, shake it out a little and call it good! I’m excited to have long hair again!

Mila Kunis on the cover of Nylon.

I have spent most of my free time (at the salon) staring at Mila Kunis’ cover of Nylon Magazine. She is beautiful and her hair is perfect. I love all kinds of hair, but consistently, I like soft, natural and mildly frizzy hair.  Honestly, I look forward to Nylon’s cover every month and I feel like they really get the styling right in almost every area. It’s refreshing to see a mag cover that isn’t “Victoria’s Secret” hair. (Ok, I LOVE that hair. I love VS hair, but there are other ways to look sexy.)

Here is a shot I love from the inside pages. I’m not sure, but I think she has faux bangs. I’ve heard about clip in bangs that you can wear for a day when you want a change, but I’ve never used them before. It sounds rad, but I’m worried I would feel like I have a floppy/dead animal resting gently on my forehead.  Have any of you ever used those? <- faux bangs, not dead animal bangs.

Last obsession, but not least….the shot on the cover of the magazine is slightly out of focus. Every time I look at it I’m a little thrown off by it, but again, it’s another cool/different ‘We’re nylon magazine and we don’t give a ___’ type thing.

How much do you love Nylon?

Last week I bought a faux fur hat. It’s so warm and fluffy and comfortable. *Surprisingly, I get a lot of attention in it….compliments and random statements like  “that’s a big hat”, haha.

What do you think about hairy hats?

*I say surprisingly, because I live in NYC. It takes a lot to get noticed here, when you are seeing strange and different things every time you go anywhere!
