It’s been a while since we’ve posted a tutorial on here! This is one we shot a few weeks ago with my friends Abbie (model) and Samuel (producer). Thanks for all your help, you two!
As I said in the video, this video isn’t so you’ll do your own color, PLEASE do not do your own color…this video is to help you know how to explain to your colorist what you want! I’m sure many of them already know how to do it, but if they don’t, here it is! (it’s also for some of you colorists who asked me how it’s done).
There are a few different ways to get this look, but this is the way I do it. I know other colorists who free hand the bleach onto wet ends. The water sends the bleach up the hair shaft. That’s a really nice effect too.
And now it’s time for an Ombre Cheer:
Let’s Go Ombre! Ombre Let’s Go!

yay! love it love it. it’s so cool to see the final product – good work to all y’all. i had a blast.
ps my kids are asking to watch it AGAIN!
Great Job Reagan. I love it. I totally wish I could style while blow drying like that. I guess I should try. Good Tutorial.
I like your model – she’s hot, hot, hot!!!
Sooo…what would I ask for if I’m a dark blonde, kinda like SJP, and I normally do the minimalist bleach weave?
It’s taking every ounce of willpower I have not to go to the CVS, buy a bottle of SunIn, and attempt this myself. that would be stupid. making an appointment at the salon STAT!
wait. they probably don’t make SunIn anymore.
LOVE your tutorials….can you do a tutorial of you blowing out your own hair? This is so difficult to do. I’m sure people would love to see it because it’s something the average gal struggles with on a dialy basis.
Love this look – I like that the way you made it very subtle on the ends (in Dallas, I’m seeing it much more obviously blonde on the ends with dark roots).
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So pretty!!!
I LOVE this. That was a great tutorial too. I think I might call my stylist today but I don’t think I can pull this off.
Great tutorial! I got my Ombre on today – but we did it totally differently. Now I want to go back and have her just do my ends again like this. Next time. And I can’t believe you can get those amazing curls with just a blow dryer and a round brush! You have seriously talent!
Holy Cow that was amazing!! I love the highlights and the blow-dry!! You’re amazing!
Thanks for posting this, this is great, can’t wait to try it on some of my clients!!
It looks so awesome! You do such a great job!
Thanks! I loved this!
I have been thinking about this and thinking about this cause i LOVE it so much.
Unfortunately, Im a blond. Any suggestions for color on the blondies???
And what kind of brush did you use? I gotta get me one but if it’s one of those 150 dollar ones, i can’t so could you give a runner up to what you were using? Please?
You are amazing!
I just got here from Abbie’s blog. This is pretty cool and I just wanted to say that your picture at the top is awesome! I love it. If Jake took it, kudos to him.
Ombre, you say? Hhmm… and here I thought I was just growing out my blond highlights!
I am so doing this someday when i get the nerve to have my hair done by you. love your blogs – especially all your witty tips and super positive outlook.
pip is the absolute cutest! I’m a super fan.
I love your blog so much. Question: after much research I just spent $150 at the salon today getting “ombre” hair. Basically she put foils in up to the roots (I thought they should only be half-way up maybe?) and skipped the top layer like I asked so that it was darker. Then left the bleach on for about 30 minutes then toned it. Problem? The highlights are totally stripe-y thin little horrible looking bits of golden blonde in my naturally ashy dark brown hair. She said the “thin-ness” would make it look nice and natural; wrong. (Also, this is my second salon attempt at ombre, the first time another lady just gave me a full head of so many highlights I was 90% blonde and with no on-purpose roots to speak of. Can I DIY fix this? I brought pictures with me as well…. it makes me sad that I feel like no stylist ever “gets” what I want even from photos.
oh and I told her about your video about the back combing technique, she said they use it for photoshoots but not for everyday clients. So I guess I’m not important enough to use the proper technique for?!
please help if you can.
thank you so much!! i’ve been wanting to learn how to do this. YOU ROCK!
You are a GODDESS! THANK YOU!! =D
Was it a bit difficult to brush out the hair after shampooing? What was the best way to take out all the teasing?
That was awesome.I enjoyed seeing someone else’s point of view. Can’t wait to try this much simplier way. Thanks so much!
After successfully trying this technique many times, I too am wondering your tips on getting it out of the hair at the sink. I feel indebted to you for helping me perfect this look, dare I ask for more hints?? Thoughts?
Finally know how to do it now. Thanks heaps
I did this with a home highlighting kit (sorry Reagan) and a bit of tinfoil, and it came out WONDERFULLY. Seriously, runway model hair. Even better if you use a curling iron and then brush it out–for alas, I have not your skills with a round brush. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks so much for posting this. I am a stylist and this was VERY helpful to me!!:)
Hi! Just came across your blog!!! Love the tutorials! My hubby is going to be all over me!
Thank you!
YOU RAWK! I had to google forever to find how to do this.. as an aspiring hair styling school student you my dear are the shhhh it. xoxo saraq
That is so cool!!!;) I’m doing it on a client in 3 days for the 1st time ever and I’m so excited!!!!;) thanks for taking the time to post this! Ur the bomb!
Did you tone the ends?
whats the best way to comb out the ends after the color has processed?
I guess, your text just about this good topic suppose to be nice and students would like to discover the essay writers to buy essays or buy papers online close to it!
I know that students must get know about this topic and essay writing. At the writing services it’s not hard to buy pre-finished essay or custom essay reffering to this good topic.
I don’t will to be dismissed from the college. I I would better like to order Case Study Writing. all my fellows do that.
Great tutorial! I will have to try this sometime this week.
I did a backwards version of this on a client today and it turned out PERFECTLY! She already had tons of blonde highlights and dark roots and wanted to go low maintenance for the Fall. I used your teasing technique to isolate some of the existing blonde in foils (I used conditioner to make it stick to the foil) and then I used Shades EQ demi-permanent color in a bottle to darken the hair that wasn’t foiled. It was a little tricky getting all of the color applied through the many rat’s nests that I had created, but it was SO worth the trouble. I gave her a Redken Chem Shot after and then used “It’s a 10″ to detangle the remaining mess.
I was a nervous wreck about doing this before I saw your tutorial, but I never once felt like I could mess it up once I started, so THANK YOU SO MUCH!

very well, Gold prices in Dubai are real, there is no doubt.
Good topic you have chosen and the description has also come out well..
amazing tutorial… i did do it at home and it was great!
thank you!
Just discovered your blog and am loving it! I, sadly, have the same problem as Danielle who posted above….went in Friday armed with pics of Rachel Bilson’s ombre hair (my natural color is darker brown, similar to RB’s) and walked out with the entire underside of my hair highlighted in stripey, yellowish highlights with no highlight on the top layer of my hair. It is super contrasty/unnatural/bumblebee colors. Eek. Called for a re-color (just can’t stand the yellow stripes – it’s 10000 times worse if I put my hair up in a ponytail!) and they can’t get me in til next week, but my hair dresser just left me a voice mail wanting to know exactly what I want to “do” with my hair so she knows how much time to book out. I am totally going to e-mail the link to this tutorial to her and see what she thinks. Thank you thank you thank you for posting this!
Thank you very much for the hot release about this topic. Could you aid to find the thesis writing service or professional buy dissertation service to buy the thesis abstract in?
Your tutorials are always so great! Thank you for sharing another amazing video!

The hairdresser that did my hair, totally screwed my hair up. All she did was a half a head (lower head) of foils. It looks terrible. contrast was horrible. She toned it down twice and it turned green ash grey gold or something.. I thought she was going to tease or hand paint the colour on .. she did neither.. arghh.. I shouldve shown her this video !!! ‘
love what you created.. !!!
Please kindly show a complete totorial on proffesionally blow drying the hair to get lots of shine in the tecniques iwant to know more . thanks
