Tutorial: Flat Iron Waves

I hope you enjoy our first tutorial and the little photo shoot we did in beautiful Charleston right after. Please, could Kat be any more beautiful?
Thanks to Jake for filming and editing, and for shooting the stills. Thanks to Kat for being the most perfectly gorgeous model ever and THANK YOU, HDOF readers for being patient! We have a few more in the works, I’m really looking forward to getting better at these, Haha! Meaning, please excuse my awkwardness during the intro, I somehow managed to make it look like I’m reading cue cards. I’m not. And I swear my voice sounds different in my head than it does on video, does anyone else feel like that? Next time I’ll practice saying “Unique New York” 100 times before hand.
**note**if you run the flat iron down more quickly, you’ll get less curl and more of a bend effect. Same goes for not turning the flat iron and just cocking your wrist all the way down, you’ll get a slight wave if you prefer that to what we do in the video. Keep in mind that the flat iron waves are meant to be shaken out and played with!
I hate being filmed/photographed because I always think I look/sound different than I actually do. I’m much cooler in my own head!
Anyways… I have so been doing this wrong! I didn’t know you kept twisting on your way down! No wonder my flat iron waves always look weird! Thank you

Quick question…you seem to pull the flat iron a lot more slowly than I do. What temp is your iron set at? I have fine, curly hair and I usually set my iron at about 190′C, but I’m going down the hair about twice as fast as you are. What temp/speed would you recommend?

Your model should be an actual runway model if she isn’t already. Then she should hire you as her personal hair dresser on fire and Jake as her personal photographer. Gorgeous!

I love that! Everyone keeps telling me to do waves with a flat iron, but I could never make it work. I can’t wait to try it! I love your tips and the tutorial was great. (and my voice sounds totally different in my head too…)

Thanks for the tutorial Reagan. Q: Does the direction you twist and the direction you angle it affect the direction of the curl? Could you elaborate on that a little more in writing maybe. That’s the part I seem to struggle with.

I didn’t use any products for lack of time (daylight). Next time I’d use a small amount of mousse.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have been experimenting with my hair to get soft waves and this is the best method by far! Your video really helped me master the technique and I have been rocking pretty waves almost every day!

What happens if I use a 1″ curling iron? I don’t have a flat iron. And which would your suggest to get if I do want a flat iron. Thanks.
I’ve tried doing flat-iron waves about a dozen times and can never make it work because my straightener won’t glide through my hair. I’ve tried cleaning the goo off of the straightener, putting different styling creams in my hair, using a lighter grip, etc.- and nothing will work. As soon as I clamp and rotate the iron, it’s stuck! Any suggestions?

Thanks for a most informative (and well made) video tutorial. A quick question: it looks like you’re using a different flat iron than those you listed in another post. Could you tell me which one you’re using here? It looks like it worked great for waving, and I’m trying to decide which flat iron to buy my daughter (she has hair exactly like your model.)
(Just realized you were using the herstyler. The photo in your link showed it laying on top of the storage bag, so it looked different…)
