Hair Answers: you like MY hair?

I can’t believe you guys like my hair! I’ve gotten more than a few emails asking for my hair’s step by step.  I guess I can’t feel too cool, because apparently I have a very common hair texture, and it can take a little bit of time to figure it out. I flat ironed my hair every single day for probably 5 years before one day I accidentally air dried it and someone gave me a huge compliment. My head then immediately communicated to my hair the following conversation…

Brain- “Hey hair, what do you say we take it easy on the damage and 45 minute daily styling?”

Hair-”I thought you’d never ask.”

…And I (we) never looked back.

Here is my hair’s step by step:

Step 1~Shower. Maybe. I’m only going to say this once (except I think I’ve said this more than once) I usually shampoo once every 4-5 days. Please like me anyway.
Step 2~Towel dry.
Step 3~Apply product. I use all or some of the following: Redken Outshine (A cream), Redken Full frame (a mousse), Garnier Wonder Waves (a miracle spray of beachiness), It’s a ten (detangler and leave in treatment),  L’Oreal Proffessionel Architexture (a wax) and Redken Anti snap. I genuinely use all (and others on occasion) of these products. I’ll start out with a cream after I towel dry, then wonder waves spray or a mousse, then I continue to scrunch until the cows come home or until my hair is dry, then I rub some wax in my hands and scrunch again!
Step 4~Scrunch more. Just do it and stop complaining.
Step 5~Maybe blow dry my fringe (bangs) if I feel like it or need to. I’m going to do a bang/fringe tutorial soon
Step 6~Dance.
Step 7~Wear for 4 or 5 days with no regrets. And maybe use a little hairspray.

*guys, this was really hard (I swear I accidentally wrote “haird” when I meant hard) for me. I guess it’s because I do my hair different every day! Sometimes I leave the house with nothing in my hair, sometimes I use everything on this list. I guess I don’t like to be chained to anything, but these products I’ve suggested really are what have been consistantly great for me. I hope it helps and that you have all the hair success you always dreamed of. And if you don’t then I think you should repeat step 6.

Love,
Reagan

Also, please forgive the picture. I had a hard time finding a decent picture that wasn’t the side of my head.

I love It’s A Ten! That is my new favorite line of product. (At least it’s new here in Utah, probably not as new in NYC ;) ) I sell it to all my clients, and they love it too! And I do love your hair. Keep up the good work!

Hello Reagan, Reagan’s brain and Reagan’s hair,

I am amazed you can go for 4 or 5 days between shampoos when you use so many products, I only manage 3 days and I hardly apply anything on my hair. Actually, does your hair look very different if you don’t apply all these? Sometimes, when I put make up on, I wonder if it makes such a huge difference or if it’s the pampering process I like ;-)

What about the cut? Layers? All one length? What would we ask for when we go to the stylist? (I’m getting ready to cut about six inches off!) :)

Blandine, after using a few of these products, my hair still hardly feels like I have anything in it. I’m very careful not to overdose on product. By the time I’m ready to shampoo, however, I’m really ready to shampoo if you know what I mean…

Amy, that is up what you! I don’t have any layers right now! I wanted it to be really full and huge while it’s short, and I wanted the bulk at the bottom that would have been lost with layers. When my hair was long, I had short layers, long layers, a heavy fringe, no fringe, lots of angling, etc. If your hair texture is like mine, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing a cut! Good luck with 6 inches! That’s a big change!

    Reagan-
I have been trying not to shampoo my hair every day. But when I work out, my hair is drenched in sweat and gross. I know you are a runner, so how do you shower and not wash your sweaty hair after a good workout??

Alright, I feel like our hair might have similar textures so next time you cut it I want a lesson! (If you have time, no pressure.) :) I went back to the diffuser because I wasn’t liking how the air dry turned out.
Also, since I went short I have to wash my hair my frequently. What’s up with that?

Looks like Renee took my question right out of my mouth too :) . I exercise everyday and my hair gets so sweaty that I feel like I need to wash it everyday. I would love to be able to go 3-4 days between washes. How do you do it??

reagan – um how cute are you? I love your blog, and love your hair advice. and i feel like i have so many questions. part of me wants to fly out to ny and just have you do my hair…

so here is my question… i’m trying to whole air dry thing, but trying to stay away from the crunchy look at the same time. When you say towel dry, do you mean you completely let your hair dry then start applying product? forgive me for needing to be hand held through this difficult hair process, but i’ve always done my hair straight… even though it has wave potential.

    you’re bomb.

    thanks,
    meg

i have naturally wavy but big ol’ ugly frizzy hair. i used to straighten it every.single.day with my chi, because even though my stylist said no, i refused because i work out and get sweaty 2x a day. well, thank YOU, stylist i do not even know. because for a month now, i have only been shampoo-ing and flat ironing about once a week and the results are the best big crazy hair ever. i bought the wonder waves spray. love it. i already had B&B surf spray but im not diggin’ it.

oh, I cant wait till my hair gets this long! (“what this isn’t long!” um yeah it is if you have a pixie!) maybe before Christmas? my hair grows fast!
My hair used to be as beautiful and wavy as yours, is it straight right now cause its so short? Its 3 inches at the longest. I hope it grows back as textured as it was
    Gorgeous hair by the way:)
