Q by Ashley: I have a two year old with hair identical to the girls in the photo you posted here. No one in our home has curly hair so my partner and I are drawing a blank on how to care for it. We wash her hair about once a week, some times less and use a conditioner every time she bathes to remove the knots (with our fingers). Beyond that its a total mess. Is there a no fuss (and natural) way to tame her hair? Would you please post about caring for curly/wavy hair?
Pretty please and Thank you!

A by Reagan: Buy this product. This is my biggest seller by a landslide. I recommend this product to almost all of my clients, many men included, but as soon as I find out they have kids it goes from a recommended product, to a must have product. This is the best de-tangler I have ever used. It is a leave-in conditioner, a smoothing cream, a de-tangler, anti-frizz and a little hold all in one.  Kids hate to have their hair brushed, and it can become a rat’s nest (as my mom often called my hair growing up), so a great de-tangler is the most important, if not the only product you need for children.

When using this product on your daughter’s dry hair, you would want to spray just water on it first to get damp on top and wet on ends, then spray It’s a Ten in the palm of your hands, rub together and then apply evenly to her hair. Then gently comb or brush through. I usually spray enough in my hands to be about the same size as a small grape, but you’ll learn what is right for her after you’ve used a few times. Also, you can spray directly into her hair, I just prefer my hands first so that I can deposit onto the hair more carefully.

This product is kind of expensive, but very very worth it. Good luck!

Celebrity(ish) hair: a bachelorette’s bad extensions

forgive me for the not so nice post I am about to write…

I don’t understand it. The first thing it seems you do to prepare for being the new “bachelorette” is to get some really bad extensions. Now, I don’t watch the Bachelor/ette, but the show is unavoidable with it’s commercials, media coveriage and the fact that my favorite show is “the soup”. It seems like everywhere I turn, Alli’s yellow-y, straw-like extensions are staring me down. In Alli’s defense, it was probably the show’s idea as part of the dolling up phase, and they were probably provided for her. They also probably had all the budget in the world to spend on them, so why so straw-like? Why such poor blending?

And I know this image has nothing to do with the rest of the post. I even think this is when she still had her real hair…I just can’t handle the styling of this picture. Why is she wearing dirty Chuck Taylors? Why is she wearing such an ill-fitting wedding dress? Why is there a velvet-y curtain behind her? I saw this photo in several magazines promoting the show. I don’t get it….

Shooting with AOL:Holidash

Seeing as how I claim to be a hair-stylist, I thought I’d show some of my work!

I often do shoots for the AOL:Holidash crew. I style Kendra’s hair and any other models they have on site. It’s a lot of fun, and a great little group. Here are a few of my favorite videos!

Notice the model in the last video on the bike. I say model very loosely. They let anyone model these days, eh?

I miss my hair. I mean I really, really miss my hair. I’m sticking with my decision to go short though. I needed that change.

Dry shampoo update and some HDOF business

Hi everyone!

I received a valid question about how to apply dry shampoo, so I wanted to quickly explain that. When I’m applying it, I only spray it on the greasy/dirty spots. Then I kind of mash it in with my fingers. No brushing or combing needed. The oil in your hair will quickly absorb the powder, and you should hardly see any product. After a few more days sometimes my color will start to look a little dull, and that is when I’m about ready for the real shampoo.

I hope that clears it up!

About the Hair Answering feature on this blog, I am in shock over how many questions I’m steadily getting. I love it! I am in no way asking you to stop sending them in, but I think I’ll have to make one specific day a week that I’ll post a few questions/answers. I have so many that I have a little trouble knowing where to begin. Thanks for being patient, I haven’t gotten a single hate comment or email for my tardiness in answers. Thanks again!

Most importantly when it comes to the questions, please send them through my hello@hdofblog.com otherwise, it is just too hard to keep them in order when they are in the comments, my regular email and on facebook. I might not ever get to them! This way I can have them easily organized.

Woohoo!

Q by Nikki:
Here’s my hair question, Any ideas for an easy, casual up-do? A little more polished than my ponytail, but one that doesn’t look like I’ve flashed back to high school prom. I love my long-ish hair, but sometimes wearing it down in the summer won’t do.

Thanks for your help!
Nikki

A by Reagan: Yay a styling question! Ok, here is my lazy answer…lazy meaning, I didn’t do any tutorials like I had wanted to. No time! I really want to get some dang tutorials up!

Here is kind of a formal/structured, but still easy to achieve look. This requires mousse to start out with before drying the hair (to give it grip and texture), then lots of teasing! Teasing sounds like an UGGGGH thing, but it is the easiest way to manipulate the hair to do what you want. We can’t see the back of this image, so go crazy with doing whatever you want. A low pony tail at the nape, a side braid or a soft bun. Easy and simple to go with more severe make-up like Christina’s.

This one is my favorite. All you have to do is loosely put your hair in a pony, pull some random pieces out of that pony, and then tuck the actually pony randomly back in. You can use pins, or even just tuck sections going different directions back into the actual pony tail holder. This look is so pretty and it can be done on day 65 of dirty hair. I’m tellin’ yas, I know she is naked and all, but picture yourself in a little spring number with some dressy sandals, it’s going to look a lot less sloppy than you think.

For Chloe’s little topknot, you’ll again want to have dirty hair. You don’t HAVE to have dirty hair, but it just makes things easier for all of us. Gather all of your hair up like you are going to put it in a really high pony, only you’re not! Instead you are going to twist and tuck and pin in place. This is another very forgiving style. If it’s not all perfect, you can be like “so what? it’s on purpose!”. Go Chloe, another look I love…Also, this hairstyle seems to go nicely with a very broad range of accessories, make up and outfits.

For this one, you’ll want to curl it first with a 3/4 or 1 inch curling iron. I know that seems small, but it will loosen up a lot if you shake it out and finger through it. This would also look pretty as a very low side messy bun. Put hair into a pony tail after it’s curled and you’ve softened the curls. Then twist, roll and form small to medium section into desired place and pin them! That’s about it!

Here is an image of my own (photo taken by Jake). A lot of people have forgotten how beautiful fishtail braids are. They are beautiful. I am obsessed with them and am angry with myself for cutting my hair, because I used to do them all the time on myself! Fishtail braids are so easy, but very hard to explain. If you don’t know how to do one, I’ll put this on my “to tutorialize” list.

There you go! Hope this was helpful. I love you guys! (guys=readers)

Hair answers: Chemical relaxers

Q by Annette:
I love your blog! I wanted to submit a question, or a few questions to you. My hair used to be curly but I have lost the curls with my pregnancies. Now my hair is just wavy but I cant do much with it. I prefer it to be straight so I spend a lot of time straightening it. Do straightening perms work and are they expsensive? I wanted to find out what you would recommend, straigthening it on my own or getting a perm? The other question is what products would you recommend to help keep the hair straight and not frizzy? The last question I have for you is can you suggest straight iron that you would suggest that works well? Thanks!
A by Reagan: Here is how strongly I feel about chemical straighteners (relaxers)…..DONOTDOIT!!!!
Dramatic? Picture this. A great blow dry regular comes to me suddenly with PIN straight hair. She tells me she got it chemically relaxed, and then she says she wants her regular big, full, wavy, Miss Texas blow dry. I say “sorry sister, you wrecked your hair and now it is going to take about 2 years to grow out that chemical treatment.”. She starts to cry. The more time passes, her brittle, damaged hair starts to break off and suddenly she has short hairs all over her head and has more frizz than the initial amount she thought she was getting rid of. Then she cries more. Then I cry because her hair is wrecked and I loved it.
Again, a little dramatic. But let me tell you a few things about chemical relaxers…
~They are the very most damaging of ALL chemical treatments. It is without a doubt, the most harsh thing you can do for your hair.
~They are permanent. The real kind. So, it isn’t going to soften after six months. It is pin straight until it has grown out and been cut off.
~Did I mention breakage galore?
~Yes? Let me remention breakage galore…
~Very expensive. So your stylist will make a lot of money and might try and talk you into it, not really caring that it is going to wreck your hair and make you cry. (I care about you, though. We’re in this together!)
~You have very little options with styling. It is chemically straightened, it wants to be pin straight. And it is going to take a lot of effort to manipulate it any other way.
~When the treatment starts to grow out, it looks really funny. The ends are uniform and straight as arrows, the top is a brillo pad.
I plead to anyone considering a relaxer not to do it. There are very few cases that a relaxer is  apropriate, and 99% of those cases are on ethnic hair.
Get a great flat iron! It will cost the same or less as ONE time relaxing treatment and will last a long time! I like CHI flat irons, but I just ordered a new flat iron (different brand) that I’ll disclose as soon as it arrives and is tested out.
Straightening oils and syrems are going to do the trick for you, my friend. You might not get away with creams like many. (I know Annette personally, so this question is a little easier to answer, keeping in mind I can visually picture her hair as I type away..). I don’t have one on the top of my head, but this is the type of thing that every single proffessional line has. And I’ve liked every one I’ve tried out.
Good luck Annette, I hope you don’t get relaxed!

A few years ago I felt the same way about the Katie Holmes bob. Let it be known that in 2010 I have decided I could happily go the rest of my life NOT doing another “Justin Bieber”. What is with mom’s suddenly bringing their sons in for $45 dollar haircut anyway? I guess he is pretty dreamy with his head gently resting on his palm….laying in that red pleather bean bag all sexily. Eww.

Hair Answers: Sleeping on wet hair

Q by Lea: Reagan, I love your blogs, and your hair. I have wavy hair that’s just past my shoulders (similar to yours) which I like to wear natural. I know how to style it with a diffuser to wear it curly. My problem is that I prefer to *wash and style my hair at night (mornings are way too hectic), but sleeping on it flattens my hair and makes it frizzy. Is there a way to keep a naturally wavy style overnight so I don’t have to wash it every morning?

A by Reagan: This is a tough question. It is so hard to change your routine when you are used to it. But after I have just answered a question about wearing a hairstyle for multiple days, I am wondering why you *shampoo every day? It would really cut out on time, effort and product if you started to stretch your style out longer. You’ll be a changed woman. Quote me on that!

Your question is actually in a way very similar to Julie’s, even though I think I got your question first! I would recommend that if you absolutely prefer 100% to *shampoo your hair at night, then you should just do a 5-10 minute touch up in the morning. The same way I suggested to Julie, i.e. spray with a little water, use a little product, do a little scrunching, maybe a little defusing..voila! It works for me, and I am a crazy sleeper. I don’t know what I do in the night, but I have wanted to video myself sleeping just to get some lifelong questions answered about what goes on there….

I so hope this works for you, because I am not about to tell you to change up your beloved routine. I lift weights every morning at 7 am while I watch re-runs of saved by the bell. Nobody in the world could convince me to change that.

Love,

Reagan. Your neighborhood hairdresser on fire.

Hair Answers: Shampoo-ing less often

Q by Julie: I have medium long, super thick, curly in the back, straighter in the front hair.  I hate washing it.  The first day I wash my hair looks pretty good, just letting it air dry.  The second, not too good.  The third, I’m pushing it.  Do you have any suggestions (besides washing it again) for maintaining a good style with curly hair the day after washing?  Also, what do you mean use a flat iron for wave?????  That blew my mind!

A by Reagan: I have a tutorial in the works for the flat iron waves. I have had so many questions about it. You guys are going to go completely ape when you see it. Seriously, you’ll go pretty ape.

Your question is one that I love. I am constantly trying to convince my clients that washing your hair less isn’t gross, dirty or bad hygiene. Nothing, not any conditioner, is better for your hair than it’s own natural oils. So, great job on wanting to wash it less. Since I’m such a fan of the multiple day style, you can bet I rocked a sometimes 5 day look with my long hair (sometimes even more with my short, that might be sort of gross.). What works best for me, and many people that I have recommended this to, is to simply spray your hair with just water the next day. If my hair has gotten a little weird in some spots…straight, flat, etc, I’ll spray a little  water with a spray bottle, apply some more product and scrunch like I usually would. I’m talking a few sprays for each section. Your hair will be a little damp, not any where near sopping.Want to know a secret? My wavy huge hair and I have been using this….

In fact, we’ve been using this like crazy. One time, my friend Kim told me she used this and that I should try it. I was like “nu uh, sister. I am a professional and a snob. I will not use Garnier”. But this stuff is awesome for us wavy, beachy b****es. Point of this is that I will spray some plain water (how many times am I going to share that step?) then I will scrunch, then I will spray this all over and scrunch again. Your hair will become the opposite of what it is now. Meaning, it is going to progressively get better, prettier and awesomer each day. Instead of suckier. (PS you don’t have to use this garnier stuff. You can use whatever product you like to begin with. This has been something I have especially loved since my hair has gotten bigger)

Last but not least…ironically I am just getting to this at the bottom of the post when the image is at the top. Dry shampoo will prevent your hair from looking and smelling oily/dirty. I have used such brands as Pssssst, Oscar Blandi and my personal favorite, Batiste. I feel like dry shampoo is still a secret to most women. It is probably my favorite beauty product ever. In fact, if I ever went on survivor, I’d bring dry shampoo as my luxury item. Then i would talk to it like it was my own little Wilson.

Thanks for the great question Julie! I hope this helps!

Celebrity hair: Michelle Williams

I’ve seen this picture floating around different magazines and websites for about the last week and a half. Michelle Williams has the gift of good hair. And good face. And good body. And good style. And good talent too. I love her. But really, isn’t this image just beautiful? Are they really dating? Should I know that already? Because a few weeks ago I saw Ryan Gosling at starbucks and he totally didn’t tell me they were together. Fine, I didn’t talk to him, but still.

This is my all time favorite red carpet look. The dress, the COLOR of the dress, the makeup the up do, the hair color. But again, that hair! Such a beautiful, romantic, soft, sweet, youthful look.

Again, rocking every length perfectly.

When i grow up i want to be michelle williams and alexa chung at the same time.
